After a 100 mile or so motorway jaunt in this weekends warm weather i pulled off to get to my destination but as soon as i hit a roundabout and needed to change down the clutch suddenly became really stiff and selecting a gear was a crunching expensive sounding affair, After a couple more miles i stopped at a junction and the piece of spanish shit (or should that be german!)decided not to select any gears at all! i thought it might be becuase of the heat so i let it cool for half hour while i popped in a local for a shandy, anyways i got back in and it was all back to normal!

i was miffed so got to my dads and we had a poke around, my dad worked for Rover and vauxhall for the last 30 years so i tend to listen to him on these issues ;) Anyway he reckoned the cable was playing up but we undid it and it seems fine! he also started banging on about thrust bearings and such like which i dont have a clue about! i used to have a Mk2 golf that had about 3 clutch cables so it wont suprise me if it is!

Anyway does anyone have any ideas before i splash out a new cable? or is it the clutch (its only done 40k)

Also something to think about is that my dad reckons the gear box in my Cordy is exactly the same as the one in most Montegos! Anyway if so, its no wonder its broke! :(

Right today has been a right nightmare and i've finished ranting, i love my Corodba really :)

BTW my cars a Cordoba 1.6 SX 1999

Could well be the cable - mine did that a while back. A plasitc bit on it which lubricates the change has probably perished. Sometimes when I depressed the clutch, it stayed down!!

Do you also find it difficult to hold the car on the clutch - i.e. jerky movement around the bite point?

Yeah i do but what seems funny is that on the bite point and when you hit the gas in 5th about 40mph the gear stick flicks back and forward like its moving with the weight of the engine??????

I'm going to fone SEAT and ask for a price for a cable....then i'll phone VW and see how much a Polo one is! Sometimes VW are cheaper!

37 quid for the 2.0 16v clutchcable, self adjusting. i got one replaced and fitted for a "bargain" 85 quid by seat.
