Brand new to this forum! I have been seaching the forum but don't seem to find a similar problem.

If I start at the beginning, I bought a 2001 petrol toledo 16. s needing a throttle body which is now replaced. The problem I have is that when cold the car starts and idle is about 1000 rpm. When you hit running temp the idle is approx 13-1500rpm. In lower gears it's had to keep a steady speed, say in traffic, bit like kangaroo petrol!

Also it reacts very quick when you take your foot off the throttle - jerkys forward.

The trouble is I don't know what has gone before I got the car to get it to tick-over. The old throttle body had the plasic cover removed and would not idle when cold but was still over reactive when you lifted your foot off the gas.

Having read some posts i intend to clean the MAF - anybody any other ideas or seen the same problem.

Cheers

I'd be looking at coolant temperature sensor as a possible source of the prob....

DPJ - thanks, where abouts is the temp sensor fitted?

I think it's either clipped into the top of the hose connector thats bolted to the LH end of the cylinder head, or clipped into the underside of the thermostat housing, same end of head.

DPJ raised a good point - i have noticed on a few occassions after driving 10 - 15 miles the temp gauge would reach running temp and then drop to just above 60 degrees and then climb back towards 90 degrees and remain there - but would this keep the idle speed at 1300rpm?

Gauge problems could be something different. A faulty coolant temperature sensor will give the ecu false readings, getting the car to fuel / idle incorrectly.

Cheers DPJ - I'll post the outcome!!

this is strange - when at running temp the car is idling at between 1300 & 1500rpm. However, if I come up to the traffice lights and wait until the last minute to depress the clutch i.e when the rev counter is about 800 rpm the idle speed will stay at this rpm speed!!

hmmm! looks like it's back to the drawing board. Replaced the temperature sensor and got the lend of a throttle body that Iknow is working ok but still the engine at idle is sstill itting at between 1000 -1300rpm and it's very hard to say keep a steady rev at 1800rpm - tends to "haunt" up and down.

Any ideas anyone?

Sorry that didn't solve the problem. :(

Has the car had a diagnostic check - it would be worth getting someone to run vag-com on it.....

i thought that after fitting a throttle body, it needed set up on the diagnostic machine?
