View Full Version : That really sucks
incredibly well. just spent a couple of hours installing the SPT mods to the airbox and the replacement filter. Took it for a quick burn up the motor...... Test track and its a definite improvement. Want to get it back on a RR at some point in the not too distant future.
I would be nice if we could all RR after every mod. I still haven't gone myself.
My cat is back in.
I've only driven it to the body shop to get my meteor-strike stonechip repaired - I've had a Mundano 1.8 LX automatic all week which I would have to be paid to drive any further than just back to the paintshop after 1,100 miles in it. It's slow, gas-guzzling, the drivers seat gradually reclines as you drive, the temperature control is mega-sensitive and it doesn't have climate so it needs constant adjustment to account for changes in outside temperature and it has a poxy heated screen to make starburst patterns at night and also block the GPS signal for my sat-nav. All-in-all a bloody awful car. Anyone who has one as a daily driver has my sympathies (unless they chose it 'cos then they should be sectioned). It's also black and looks like it has been washed with a Brillo pad despite being a 52 reg with 8k miles (9k now ;) ) - so I won't be looking for a black car after I sell up as I had sort-of considered doing.
Anyhow, the Beezer felt flatter with the cat back in.
are we to guess what you have done?
could you email me some pics though? I'm trying to get my ass into gear & update the SPT
Mark
I need to finish it properly before posting pics anywhere. It needs a bracket to stop the pipe bending towards the engine. Will get that done tomorrow.
Rage,
Is this something that could be done to say my Tdi... Bearing in mind my cost restraints!!!!!
Cheers
Stu
Have you seen the airbox mod guide on the main page?
I think anyone could do it. Total cost of mods ( not including panel filter) £15
1M of 2" diameter 5 bar non collapsable waste suction hose from Newbury tools
2 Rolls of Black insulating tape
1 small bit of large diameter expandable ducting to do the final routing stage.
use of 1 heat gun to melt the plastic a bit.
Cut the suction hose into 2 lengths then tape them 1 above the other. melt airbox aperture to accept larger hose. Route hose the same way the original one went and the I used the expanding section to attach it to the original intake section. I'll post up pics when I have put a bracket in it.

Flash,
I never used the panel filter I bought - it's still sealed in a box. I want £35 (about 50 Euros?) for it if you're interested.

Didn't take photos of the filter itself as its not very exciting really green and very thin.

ok ! I think it's Green but give me the reference plz to check the new price ;)
It is a green one available from www.greenfilters.com or from badger5
I like it Rage, looks nice and tidy.
Does it make any real difference??
I might have to ask you to post a how to guide for it, I expect many others would like to see it too. Maybe put in on the SPT website?
Cheers
Looks good Simon. Was thinking of grabing more air into the box myself. Looking to pick it up from the lower left corner of the car. What diameter tubing are U using?
Flash - The greenfilter pricing from Bill (badger5) is in the discount section.
due to the serious space restiction I used 2 bits of 2" suction hose stacked vertically. Stuck them together using silicon sealant ( kitchen type ) and a roll of black tape. heat the air box and stick bits of wood in the opening to stretch it keep heating it at all times ( don't burn it though ) when its big enough to take the 2 pipes, put them in and melt it tight around them. Thats about it really the adapter is a 10cm Round to rectangle kitchen vent adapter from B&Q.
Its made noticeable difference to the available top end revs. Previously it felt like a struggle to get to the higher revs. Now it gets there with no problems.
I've already submitted a couple of pics to mark for the SPT website.

Like I said before, on a tuned 180bhp Ibiza TDI130 took to the rolling road there were ~5bhp gain with an open sponge cone filter (HKS Supermegaflow) all after 3.500RPM, read top-end.
prc, other TDI130/150 platforms (a3, golf, leon/toledo, etc..) will net less gains (if any...) because the standard airbox is larger and less restrictive than the Beezers one. Anyway if you wnat to give it a try, maybe you could do 2 repeated tests on the rr, one with the stock airbox/filter and the other modified.
The rr shop I told you about (in Caneças) has already tested an Upsoluted Leon TDI150 very recently with some nice results (195bhp/410Nm)..it might be a good benchmark for your Toledo. ;)

My problem is time right now, haven't had time to do sh@t. PS I haven't called you yet because I only remember at night when I get home (like now).:( :(
Have you looked at getting the larger intercooler from forge. I am considering as the car seems to have more power when its raining. Howether in england we are blessed with lots of rain

shame about the lack of good traction in the wet though.
I have been toying with the idea of uprating the intercooler. Along with the idea of removing the fog lamp/s to allow more air to get to it.
Rage, your nuts man !!! It goes plenty quick enough .... u want More???
If theres room for more improvement then its gotta be done.

The removal of the right fog lamp (hidding the IC) has been done and tested with good results.. ;)
Altough the ideal solution in my opinion, is to install a more efficient IC, just like the perfect flat type one from the PD TDI150 engine.
