View Full Version : Arosa II 16v Cut-out
My brother (no, really. I've got a 1.0 S ;) ) has bought a new Arosa 16v.
While travelling down to London about a month ago, the emissions light came on in his dash. After phoning SEAT help, they said it's OK, and as the car was brand new it's probably just being heavy on emissions.
My brother continued on his way. A few days later, the car began to cut out, at roundabouts, at 70 mph... a bit dangerous then. He took the car back to IMG SEAT, Warrington and they replaced the ECU. A marked improvement in performace followed.
Yet, returning to London the car cut out again, this time at about 80mph on a busy motorway. After 3 weeks with the garage, they diagnosed the SEAT CD player casing as being the cause- the reason? It was live (!). They replaced the CD player.
Anyway, everything appears OK, and compared to my 1.0 that thing bloody flies.
Just wondering if anyone else has had a similar problem?
Cheers,
Hindey
Hello Hindey,
I had the exact same problem on my new Arosa 16V! I would be driving down the motorway and all of a sudden the engine would start to give out at 80mph! After that the emissions light came on and I took it to the dealer next day. The light turned off by the time I got it to the dealer and they could only tell me it was probably bad petrol. Then it happened to me again on the motorway a month later. I phoned the dealer and they said keep an eye on it and next time it happens and bring it in. Well, it did happen again only this time on a small road going about 30mph (but with heavy acceleration!). I started to notice a pattern that the road was always wet or damp. I told the dealer this and they told me to bring in the car and they would waterproof the engine etc. again. That was in Sept or Oct and I haven't had a problem since. Unfortunately, I do not go on the motorway that much so I am not fully convinced that everything is back to normal. I think whatever it was, it would only happen when the engine was revving quite high and in my case damp.
Has your brother had any more problems?
I don't have a SEAT CD Player, I use a Panasonic CD Changer and that hasn't caused any problems.
Cheers,
max
Hiya... it sounds pretty similar doesn't it?
My brother had his CD player checked, and there appeared nothing wrong with it. As a result, my brother asked for his money back on the car plus compensation for travelling from London-area to Warrington every weekend.
Top marks for IMG SEAT (Warrington) though, as they exchanged the car for a brand new 16v. This one a) goes shit loads faster and b) hasn't cut out yet!
He's just been from London to Aberystwyth in it, and says it flies over the Welsh mountains. Grr arf grr. I want a 16v.
I'll ask him about damp and his old car, see what he says.
BTW, does your car have the heated rear window button on the left hand side of the dash? Also, if it's red, what colour are the light casings? Even better, do you know when it was made (says on the engine mount)?
Thanks for your post!

hi guys, thought you would like to know, i had a Y reg that did exactly the same, spent 6 weeks in the dealership out of 3 months of ownership, car broke down 4 times and they said it was the engine speed sensor everytime, they eventually exchanged the car for a brand spanker which has been fine except for a water leak......the old car was Y937ABC, god help whoeevr bought that car!!! seems the Arosa's have lots of gremlins at work!!

Hi,
Having some problems with this site and cookies. With IE6 it keeps logging me out when I try and reply to a message. Using Netscape 6.2 now and seems okay.
It sounds like your brother and David are lucky to get their Arosa's replaced. Luckily mine seems okay now without any faults since it was looked at last (Sept 2001). Fingers crossed...
Mine is a Y reg as well, bought late Feb 2001. The date on the engine block in 19th Dec 2000 and it has red casings behind the rear lights. The Heater Control unit is located beneath all the Heater Controls. Why do you ask?
Out of curiosity what kind of MPG (or miles to a tank of petrol) do you guys get. Mine seems to be thirsty although I am sure that is down to city driving and lots of frantic acceleration!?!?
My only small gripe with the car (apart from the problem above) is the throttle response. It seems to be slow to rev. I have heard a chip can cure this (and increase the horsepower) but to the detriment of my warranty probably.

Just wondered when the car was made to see if this problem occurs with cars of a specific age.
Also, if it's red with red light casings, it isn't the latest spec. The latest spec has black on red light casings.
As for MPG, I don't know. I'll ask him next time I see him.
Cool...
What do you think about the black rear lights. I saw it briefly in the dealer and my first reaction was I like mine better. But, I have noticed dirt build-up in the edges of the casing. Maybe they fixed that with the new casings.
In the year I have had the Arosa I have only seen one other New Arosa but it wasn't a 16V. Have you seen any others except for your brothers of course :-) Wonder what the sales figures are for the Arosa in the UK. It seems they sell many more in Germany where there a lot of aftermarket products etc.

Im sure the lights on ine have black casings with clear lenses, as for fuel mpg, the most i have ever seen out of a tank is 280 miles, most of this motorway driving, combined motorway and city driving i get the stated 42mpg, however that figure drops to around 30-35 if im stop starting all the time, the engine is quite thirsty though.
i would of had a TDI had they come with a better spec than they do, the 16V has so much more stuff as standard i think its the better car.
as for the throttle response the only car ive driven with better response is my old Peugeot 106 which never had a CAT convertor fitted, these usually kill throttle response and its true that some chips etc do cure this, wether they will actually make the car any faster is debateable though!!

Uhm, the black on red looks better, me and my brother are agreed =)
The red looked OK, just not as striking.
Apart from my Arosa and obviously my brothers I have seen a grand total of three (well, discounting ones in dealers). I've seen a black 16v (I could have punched the guy, it looked so cool), a silver TDi (How dare you have silver! I also could have punched him) and a red unidentified. Twasn't a 16v tho.
You're right about the TDi. SEAT have been a bit slow on that. VW do a Lupo TDi PD Sport, which is same spec as 16v (minus exhaust). Lupo 16v vs Lupo TDi, I'd have the TDi. The 0-60 doesnt bother me much, the 144ft/lb of torque would be very interesting.
MPG he reckons about 40, btw.
Oh, and I've had a blue Arosa courtesy car, but that didn't count.

small world then, i test drove a black one and settled on a silver one to buy. i reckon black is the best colur but you will spend all of your life trying to keep it clean!! also loos fantastic in yellow and red, this is the 16 v im talking about by the way!!
dave
I will be going to the dealer in Feb for a yearly service so I will have a closer look at the black tail lights. I agree about black, looks amazing, a bitch to keep clean... I was seriously thinking about the black but went for the red in the end. Excellent colour but people keep brushing my bumpers! Drives me up the wall...
Yeah, the black ones look amazing.
Must admit, not seen one in silver. I think the silver ones would probably look almost look as good as black, but I'm probably biased =)
My brother is on his way home (i.e. were I'm sitting) now so I might force him to post something, answer some questions.
My service is in June... long way off yet.
Black is by far the best colour !!
The black lights look very good on the black paint, as itallows the eye to pick out the chrome surrounds.
Arosa sport problems. Has anyone else lowered theres on 16s and suffered with bump steer.
