thinking of the above work this year for the cordie(that will be staying for a long while now),a few q's:
other than polishing and porting will lighter valves and springs help any or give some gains of some kind, seen the headwork on the rally cars rally cars my local garage have had done and they seem very good,ok they only lasted a season of thrashing round forests of england and wales,so am wondering what gains would be yeilded from lighter gear.
presume lighter springs/valves etc would help the engine rev quicker, but is there a down side?moving the torque much higher up the rev range for example, and would re-profiling the stnd cams be sufficient?i know the best bet would be to buy some goochie ones but if i'm gonna spend some dough on new valves/springs etc would it be better to get new cams too?

jase, from what ive seen looking through gsf, europarts and the fella doing my engine work, theres not much to be had in lighter springs and valves, they are pretty thin as it is (and weigh bugger all, something like that you really want a bit of meat there adding strength to the setup.
cams wise he said thats the next thing to get done, or else a perf manifold, after flowing that is.
im getting my head skimmed, what gains are to be had will be seen as i intend to RR it as soon as its done, perhaps even doing a docu type write up on progress, ie before flowing and skimming, after flowing and skimming, before cams and chip, after cams and chip. The only thing is that it will take time as im no lee "richy rich" shand ;)

brend having spoken to bill ala chat room the lightend stuff is for the rally boys, gonna sort the handling first then maybe spend a few quid for chrimbo, saying that the handling is far better than the ibiza in stnd form:cheers:

I've got a load of quotes with break-down and power estimates from AmD if you want to see. Email me edc@seatcupra.net and i'll forward them on.

Ed, i'll have a look at that if only for interest.

Jas,

Yer, lightening mechanical stuff really is only for racing apps or rallying. Tis not cheap too. You deffo don't want to push the power band further up the range in your 'daily drive' either. Maybe if you do decide to go down this route then a fast road set of cams maybe wofrth considering....lightening flywheels, cranks etc is typcailyl done 'with opertunity' e.g. when you do a clutch etc you can whip out the flywheel and get a couple of pounds taken off and get it balanced.

Of course, you can always retain what yuo already have in terms of speed by not plonking a gurt great spoiler on the back...
