My gear box lost 5th today, I was doing 60 in 5th and went to overtake when it just jumped out! It didnt sound very nice at and now when you put the gear stick where 5th used to be there is a horrific crunching and it all seems loose. So now I have got the worlds only 4 speed cordoba!
Does this sound like the box? because if it was the clutch surely the problem will be on all the gears?

How much am i looking for a rebuild? I'm going to phone around some places today and also look into how much bus tickets are! :(

Sounds like more gearbox than clutch to me but don't know. Probably just a linkage problem or summat?

Don't bother getting a rebuild, it'll cost more than a recon 'box or one from a scrappie.

time to change should be 3 hours. - but it sure doesn't sound like a clutch [then you'd not be able to do anything]

Sounds like a selector 'fork' inside the box maybe.

Normally on the 020's it's 2nd that conks out.

5th gear was historically quite a common problem on 020 boxes - mk2 Golfs particularly it seems. Though they usually will continue to go into gear, but want to jump out. Recon box is the cheapest solution, but make sure you get the correct set of ratios...

MP - 2nd gear is usually a synchromesh problem i gather...

Yeah I thought a recon box could be a good idea but finding a cordoba ratio one could prove a fruitless task, anyone know what else it could be fitted to?

any ideas where i can get one in the west midlands/shropshire area?

If its any help, my clutch started to go very stiff last week but freed itself off and only became stiff intermittantly......then the 5th gear went. i originally thought it was the cable so i bought one for £40 and it arrived the day the gear went!:o seems a waste now!

Even with my badges on mine, people still ask me what it is, you should see their face when I tell them it has the same engine as the base model Audi TT ! :D

My Dutch boss didn't seem to believe me when I told him the above, he said 'well if you say so'.

He's only jealous, he's just got a VW Golf TDI 100bhp as a new company car, seems tax in The Netherlands is really expensive (more than ours) :D

I have to stop changing the subject ;)

I live in Shifnal mate, know it? I'm the only one in out town with a Cordoba of any type!

I know the blue one from halfords, he works there! Ive seen him before now having a look over my car when i was waiting at the till!
maybe he spotted the www.seatcupra.net stickers and is now a member!

On the meet front, theres a guy called Elmo off the SE site who has a rather nice Red Cupra, he lives in Shrewsbury and is trying to organise a shropshire meet sometime, maybe we can sort something out and have a few

That'd be an 02A box Brendy - cable change - for 2.0 16v.

I believe RadCordy has a 1.6 which would have an 020 rod change box. But happy to be proven wrong...

was just wondering if any of the internals were interchangeable G. casing would no doubt be different.

if he's still got it it was free, not that hard to change from rod to cable according to stealth, personally i'd sooner have the rod change.
know shifnal well rad,we get quite alot of work there when the weathers bad(flooding),back to yer gearbox, try golfnutz in middlewich
very helful gang of dubsters, well up for a shrewsbury meet, work there all day, shop there most weekends so not a prob for me.btw theres some stuff at telford halfords going cheap, bought a half leather gear knob today for 6 quid(rrp19.99)and the "euro" blue ibiza was sat outside, looks very good in a subtle kind of way,may bung him a flyer when i remember to put some in the motor:cheers:

cheap stuff! great! a couple of months ago i bought a pair of grooved red dot discs from there for £29.99, bargain!

I'll get on to Elmo then, they normally meet on the riverside car park, you know the one by the new council offices that always floods! cant say that shifnal ever floods though!

what model is yours then?

WeeJase

riverside hahaha its normally in the bloody river, shifnal does get a wee bit but its usually shit coming out of the sewers into the brook that runs down through the housing estate(sorry forget the name ).
anyway up for a meet i'm in a metallic blue cordoba sx16v,if you see that or some daft sod flashing you in a severn trent van that'll be me:cheers:

Yeah i know where you mean now, it does cause some trouble every so often!
Dont tell me about severn trent vans! My brothers always complaing about you lot crashing them! And thats quite often! :) His place have got the contract to repair them all, you treat those Escorts like shit and the defenders seem to get in a right state if you crash one! (ie - half a tree stuck through the front):p
