View Full Version : Honeycomb Grill Fitted (+ fitting guide pics)
Got home & part 2 of the new look grill had arrived
So I thought I'd do a little write up on how to remove the grill & fit it.
The grill is quite easy to get off, if you know how (I've had the grill off a few times now)
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v379/bmxboy/SEAT%20PICTURES/P1010438.jpg
Its held in at the top by two expanding plugs, easiest way of getting them out is to use two screwdrivers & lever the top part of them out
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v379/bmxboy/SEAT%20PICTURES/P1010439.jpg
Exhibit A - The retaining plug thingy
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v379/bmxboy/SEAT%20PICTURES/P1010442.jpg
The grill also sits under the slam panel in its own little groove

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v379/bmxboy/SEAT%20PICTURES/P1010456.jpg
The grill is also held in place on each side by two clippy things, best way of releasing these is with a long flat screw driver, try & ease them out gentle, maybe a squirt of WD-40 to help. (cant believe how dirty its got in a day)
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v379/bmxboy/SEAT%20PICTURES/P1010445.jpg
The honeycomb section is held on to the main grill by two very small self tappers

Nice one mate! I was thinking of doing something to the grill and this might be it along with the MY08/Cupra grill.
Alex
TBH, I don't see the point of this honeycomb grille.
It looks too muddled with the original slatted one.

Agreed, might look better in the light but seems a weird combination....
And there I was hoping it was a front honeycombe grill. :(
Fish
Points taken,
But I think it kind of adds something "sporty" to the grill, although the shape of the honeycomb isnt a 100% match for the lower, which is a shame...
I have other things planned for the grill still ;)

I like it Jace....!
Have just fitted my Black Cupra08 Grill and looks mint against Crono Yellow and the gaping black grills of my FR....
Next.... Getting some matt black laminate cut by a vehicle livery firm in Barnsley to infill the recessed section behind the front number plate - making it even more aggressive.

aha new pics...
does look good! :)
The honeycombe grill looks great, done the same to mine. I know its not to everyones taste but its only £15:D and you can`t go wrong at that price.
As for the black surround looks great on the black car, but maybe not so good on my luna one:shrug:
It does seem odd to me though, Fashion?? On mk1`s everyone was trying to mod the grills to get the chrome trim look like a cupra R, saying that black looked dull:confused:
Now its turned tables and Black is in:whistle: Are flared trousers back in aswell now then?? I can`t keep up............

hello everybody !
I'm french so excuse me if you don't understand all what i will say.
So, I've got an ibiza and i'm looking for the large grill on the front bumper with the S of SEAT but in honeycomb .... do you think the leon grill is larger than the ibiza one ? maybe I can use it to replace my grill.
Does someone can tell me the reference and the price of the leon grill in england please ?
Thanks

Curiosity got the better of me & I purchased one of these honeycombe grilles from Sere Motors.
I have to admit, it looks better than I first thought.
However, me being me, I may play around with the look a little. :D

hello, iv brought one of these grills and carnt seem to get the dam thing of, iv got to the stage of geting the top push plugs out and the gril slides up abit and then carnt seem to find the other two bits that hold the grill in place? are they on the sides of the grill to the lert and right of the seat badge.
If you look at the 4th pic posted by Jace and once you have moved the grille up slightly you can pull it out from the slam panel enough to see into behind the right and left of the grill. The lugs in photo 6 are located approx 1/2 way up on each side of the grille and all I had to do was to use a long (flat) screw driver to prise the hooked section of the grille out of the vertically slotted holder. I inserted the screw driver to either side of the hand in photo 4 an diagonally down to the fixing. I may have been lucky with my first time attempt but if came out easy. The instructions with the grille are useless and my Dealer could not help either as their manual had the same instructions. The only bit of the instructions which is of help is the bit where you have to push in and up with you fingers to move the grille section up a bit. Remember to pull the top of the grille section out from under the top of the slam panel. See Photos. Finger pressure was not enough in my case and I had to press my palm fairly hard to push in and up.
Hope this helps

We're still waiting on a part number for the Linea R grille as an alternative:

This would match the honeycombe of the lower grilles on the FR & Cupra.
The current honeycombe grille is a near perfect match for the rest of the range.
Rather than using a screwdriver to prise the tabs out - me and a mate each got a hand through the slats in the grill and pulled the tabs at the side away each doing one side at the same time.
Don't know how easy it would be to do on your own as both your hands would be turned in opposite directions if you see what I mean.

Thanks for the guide Jace, made life a lot easier seeing your guide.
Cheers!
Very nice designs although as I drive a black car, I think its too much black for me I think lol, I like the chrome maybe because i got the standard bumper :(
yeah I prefer the chromed on a black car. I just fitted the Chrome Front Grill Border on the bumper as well, make it look pretty neat. I grab some pics tomorrow if the weather holds up.
Heres mine although no black grill, but i think it looks just as good to me aleast :)

heres the Chromed fromt grille border. the picture though doesn't really do it justice.

I was planning to buy the 3 sets sides and middle but now i may have to rethink about...I don't know about that pic tho as you said no justice from that rather harsh i would say lol but nice to see is gleaming :)

Did you paint the Seat badge yourself?
If so, what paint did you use, was there much prep and did you remove the "S" or just mask it off?
done it but it was hard work i still cant get the little plugs to go back in at the top its ok though. looks mint aswell im well pleased. got the seat plates, the grill the spoiler and skirts and the ring sticker on its looking hot il post some pics tomorow
I have the honeycomb grill with the chrome surround and i have now bought a cupra grill with the black surround, im just wondering can i transfer the honeycomb piece from the chrome grill onto the cupra black grill? Anyone help
I'm probably being an idiot but am struggling to get the grill off.
Once I've taken off the top plugs I can't seem to pull it forward enough to get a good view into the back to unhook the "clippy things" in picture 6.
Any advice? I feel like Im putting a lot of pressure on it already and don't want to damage it.

Thanks for putting the guide on here. Had a bit of an issue to start with trying to find the 2 side clips and then trying to get them unclipped! Managed to unclip them in the end without the use of a screwdriver, just used my hands through the front of the grille.
Can't believe how much of a difference it makes to a red Leon.

is it just the screws at top then the two clips on either side??

Yeah, the screw pop out quite easily, pull the grill out of the slam panel then pul the top towards you. You need more force than you think the grill can take!

I have also just replaced the grill on my FR. I also was having trouble with the last two clips on the side. I think the temperature (-5) contributed to the trouble, in that the plastic was brittle and my patience thin. Eventually i gave up, drop kicked the screwdrivers into the pond and pulled the grill out. Needless to say, i broke the clips/slots on the bumper but the new grill fits securely.
I would advise to perform the transplant when its warmer!

Hello,
Well thought this job sounded easier than changing the grille on my Civic.. how wrong I was!
Took the little clips out at the top, lifted grill up a bit and inserted a screw driver, locating the clip with my fingers through the grille.. hmm then... nothing! It may be a ridiculas question but am I supposed to press the clip in? It wasnt budging.. maybe the wd40 will help this??
Any assistance would be much appreciated.. I will not be beaten! I dont think long nails are helping matters haha
Cheers in advance guys and girls :)

I've been trying today to get it off, and it just wont budge! Undone the two plugs at the top, the whole grill will then slide up about a centimeter, then tried to prise the clips open and they won't move, tempted to give up and just keep the surround chrome :(

Baggy, Trust me when i say that i was nervous when removing it as i did not want to explain to the wife that i had ..err.....broke it!! But as long as you have removed the 2 lugs at the top (£.41 Pence each...!) then grab the grill evenly through the front bars at the sides and gently but firmly pull! You should not do any damage if you follow this correctly.

I eventually got it. Brute force is the answer. Pulled it a lot and it weakened the plastic a bit so it finally freed itself.

The grill is also held in place on each side by two clippy things, best way of releasing these is with a long flat screw driver, try & ease them out gentle, maybe a squirt of WD-40 to help. (cant believe how dirty its got in a day)

The honeycomb section is held on to the main grill by two very small self tappers

Cheers. I can only find the "LEON LINEAR GRILLE" for about £100 which looks like it has two black surrounds then the honeycomb grille. Is there a different one?

I can't post links yet...
That is the Linea R grille. You can get it for a fair bit less from David @ Sere on this forum. You can remove the chrome/silver surround and replace with black.
Cheers. TBH I'm not that bothered about losing the slats, I just wanted the get rid of the chrome surround and I thought a new grille might sort out both. Unfortunately the best it seems I can hope for with the honeycomb replacement is two black surrounds which I think solves one problem and creates another.
Looks like I need some vinyl wrap and an artistic friend...

Lose one of the surrounds, knock off about £70 and paint the "S" black and all and it's an effing deal...

funny. if you can get one painted black cheaper then good luck to ya
Try looking at the honeycombe grille in another light. Not only does it look good but it can stop flying objects from puncturing the radiator behind, the straight bars could potentially allow more damage fro bigger objects.

good thinking, never thought of that
Very true. Can you also supply a windscreen riot shield to match?

yeah I got the black grill looks smart I went to seat to get the black mirror caps and the drivers comes black ready to fit but the other cap comes primed and needs painted gutted! i was thinking of doing it my self but probly best just to pay to get done! anybody got the milltek cat back system? I have asked for price for car but think its around £7-800 just want to know if its any good
I have also just replaced the grill on my FR.
I would advise to perform the transplant when its warmer!I second that! And +5 C isn't warm enough either :P. Lots of pulling and using a screw driver for the clips did the trick, but not without breaking both of them :). Doesn't really matter though, it's securely in place without them.

Fitted my grille today, took about 15 mins.
yes the side clips are a pain at ist, but using a long flet head screwdriver as advised by the OP worked a treat.
the 'bees nest' grill does match the lower gille on mine, it looks a lot better too

Hey peeps!
The "chrome" surround on my slated grille ('07 Cupra) has started peeling. Does anyone know the part number (and price) for the slatted grille with the black surround as fitted to later pre-FL Cupras?
Thanks...

any seat dealer can supply you the grille, just give them that part number number i gave you.the only other option is to take off the chrome surround and get it painted by us or someone else.hope you get it sorted
Nice one Jace. I used this guide today. I didn't snap any clips even though it was cold cos I'm pretty much F1 engineer standard  but I would've been lost without this.
BTW Lumby, I got the slatted grille with the black surround from Sere motors for £40-something. Nice chap.
Has anyone removed the enclosed grill on an ecomotive??
Want to wrap the chrome in gloss black, but have realised you can't get a screw drive through the grill to assist with the two side clips..
I only removed mine by getting at it from the outside. I slid a bit of thin plastic between the edge of the grille and the paintwork and then used a couple of taped up flat headed screwdrivers to 'unclip' it (after I'd removed the plugs at the top).
There is another very good guide on this subject elsewhere on the forum with, what looks like, images from a work-shop manual. I'll see if I can find it again and put on a link...
Taken from terrymcg's post in "Honeycomb grill (not the insert)". I used another screwdriver rather than "lever U 30800":
If it will help anyone I have lifted the official guide, maybe it might make it easier for someone. Although I am not too sure as I have not tried to remove mine yet.
Anyway, here it is:
Removing
– Open the front bonnet and hold open with the bonnet rod.
To remove the expanding rivets -1- proceed as follows
http://i420.photobucket.com/albums/pp286/terrymcgrouther/E63-10088.png
– Insert lever -U 30800- in the space ready in the central piston of the clip and move the piston upwards and extract the expanding rivets -1-.
– Insert a fine plastic spatula between the bumper trim and the upper grille -2- in the area marked in red -3-.
– Place the lever -U 30800- below level -a- = 22 mm.
NoteInsert the lever -U 30800- sufficiently to make enough space between the plastic spatula and the upper grille -2-, to permit a flat screwdriver to be inserted.
– Insert a flat screwdriver -4- into the area of level -a- = 22 mm.
– Use the flat screwdriver -4- to lever in the direction of the -arrow-, release the clip -5- from its fastening -6-.
– Remove the upper grille -2- on one side and repeat procedure to remove the other side.
– Apply pressure to the lower part of the grille -1- in the direction of the -arrows- to release the clips -2- from their fastening -3- to the bumper trim.
http://i420.photobucket.com/albums/pp286/terrymcgrouther/E63-10089.png
Then remove the grill!
Cheers Grezza,
Good info:D Think I'll wait for things to warm up a little before I give it a go!

Excellent guide, fitted mine this afternoon and it looks great on a black Leon :)
hi there, can you tell me did you replace the silver surround on the grille for the black yourself. If so where did you get the black surround from?? Thanks.
Great guide, didn't look too different but I like it. Good guide too. I would probably spray the inner grill just to make it a little more noticeable. I have a black Leon so not sure what color i would pick.

Fitted this today, I tried to do it properly (with what tools I had!) and eventually just pulled it off by accident/with force. Clips broken but as everyone else says it REALLY doesn't matter, if anything makes life easier to take out in future!
