View Full Version : Ibiza Mk2 Heatshield - self help
No axle stands or ramp (if needed) to reach the heatshield on the downpipe.
I think it's welded on - am I right or does it use bolts?
In any case, can I uase araldite (or similar) for a fix? What adhesive will take the heat?
clipped on - hence the clips gets rotten & loose springyness
depends on what glue, but look for very high temperature stuff. maybe buck & hickman - they're good distributors for araldite (I think)
Mark
PS - lots of types of araldite are available
I posted a few weeks ago that I was going to rip mine off, but it is welded on
I had my car up on a lift, took the plastic cover off the bottom, but still couldn't see how to go about stopping the rattle. I gave up after about an hour. There's just no real access to it. (Have photos to prove!)
If you manage to sort out the rattle Ed, I'd be interested to know how as it's driving me nuts!

It went after a few months of owning it and was done on warranty. That was maybe 18-24 months ago. I thought about taking it off but it is there for a purpose. I wouldn't like to see my engine bay start smoking.
Can you see it from the top? If so would it be possible to dribble some glue down and use some lengths of metal or wood to exert some pressure on it?
Nope, can't really access it from the top either unfortunately. There's some other kind of guard in the way.
I've got my camera with me, so I'll take some pics while I'm looking at my suspension tonight, if you want.
Ah well, I'll wait a few more noisy months and sort it with a new exhaust:)
Well, both mine were rattling. The one on the cat is a b*gger and requires the pipe coming out. I've got a bit of a bodge fix at the moment but it works and will probably last longer than the exhaust which has rusty joints, a cracked rear section. Should be able to fix it good and proper next year when a new exhaust goes on.
Instead of a rattle, I now have a throaty 'snort' which appears for a millisecond at more than half throttle:D Added to the sounds of the cracked centre pipe (by both silencers) then you have a pretty good 'performance' exhaust on the cheap:p - until next MOT in 12 months.
Could you perhaps tie some wire or something around the pipe and heatshield, pulling them tight together and stopping the din? Or would the wire vibrate as well and make more noise?
I wonder if it is more accessible on the 8v, smaller engine and all that. I haven't really had a look at the heatshield on the downpipe on mine. MY mate has some car lifts so I'll get right under and have a look one day.
I suggested a big jubilee clip or 2. TBH I don't know if the garage that did my service took my tip or did something else but the impresion I got as that this couldn't be done without the pipe coming out. I'm not that bothered. If it happens again it's just coming off, but I've been told that's a cat off thing as well.

Are you guys talking about that heat sheild thats on the bottom of the cat, because my one is hanging down at the front where one of the weilding spots has broken, could this be the rattling sound im hearing at low speeds and over bumps, because thats driving me mad!!!
But when I touch when its cold it doesnt seem to have that much play in it, would it move that much more when its hot ?
That's the one. If it's really loose i suppose it could be heard over bumps too.

I can hear this noise somtimes when its just idleing along with when im on the move.
Sounds about right. Mine rattled as soon as the motor was turned! Pronounced noise at certain rpms but noise through the entire rev range.

any ideas on how to fix it ?
You can weld it as it is, did that and the welds came loose. Now there's a kind of temp fix with no welds. I just threw a load of suggestions at the garage as it was in for a service. You might do well to bind it to the cat by wrapping exhaust wrap round the lot.

Would that exhaust wrap be advisable round a cat?
Depends what exhaust wrap. You'd have to check what temps they will take but most can be used from the exhaust manifold all the way back. Or just wrap some round the heatshield to prevent the harder surfaces touching?
My cat shield clip has broken on the front (small meatl piece that the screw goes into), so it hangs done at the front as well. Gonna get a new cip, so I can fix it.
For the time being, I have wrapped it up with an exhaust repair kit.
just rip the bugger off, make sure you never drive on dry cut grass after though,or you may come back to a burnt out car:cheers:
