dash illumination

here's a question....

My 2000 reg. Toledo TDI SE has developed a problem with the dash illumination. Occasionly much of it refuses to light up - the climate control, radio indicator on dash, electric window controls etc. (basically everything other than the speedo, rpm, temp / fuel gauges and milometer).

Seems to happen when the car is quickly re-started after running for a while (eg getting gas), or sometimes cuts off when driving in the wet.

Dash illumination thumbwheel control also never works (dash illumination always on full) - could be related?

Anybody had similar probs?

9/10 its the switch assy which incorporates the thumbwheel


they have a little trick to twist and release em

basically hold switch in and twist it as usual but held in firmly

and the whole switch is released :)

if part in stock its literally a 5 min fix


rheostat clips to the back and is approximately £26

This happened to me before (1-1.5 years ago).

Service guys said that dash illumination switch was broken and they replaced it for app. 20 $...

They cheated me ?
