Hi all,
Does anyone know if there are manifolds available to run huge turbos on the 180bhp engine? I don't mean to run the KO4 but more like a T4 turbo with external wastgate?
Also am I right in thinking the 1.8T has an external wastegate as standard?
Lastly does anyone make low comp forged pistons for this engine? I believe the stock pistons are forged but the 225bhp ones are slightly lower compression?
Cheers all,
Barry

Bill, Ibizacupra or Max torque are the men for a question like this
I'm pretty sure that the cupra R/TT type engine runs lower compression
and that Bill runs Circa 350bhp (IHI roller bearing turbo) on a basic 150 engine with standard pistons(although not sure how much of the rest of the engine is standard) and he does a great deal of trackdays!
Seems unusually strong!
for details on the standard turbo see

Yup, Jabbasport do an IHI conversion along these lines (which is what Bill runs..)

Thanks for the help guys.
And Bill if you read this is your engine still at standard compression of 150bhp engine? I assume not.

Hello
My engine is as supplied internally.. so runs its stock 9.5:1 CR
225 motor runs 8.5:1 I think.... so would be better suited to running higher boost levels.
My boost is 1.15bar so is'nt very high... but produces 325bhp usually and 280lb/ft torque.
I am contemplating a lower CR and lightly ported head for some more power and boost. Charegcooler first tho.. (next week :D)

Excellent Bill thanks.
What Turbo are you running then?
The standard 1.8T wastegate and turbo are a paired unit, in that they cannot be separated.
There is no "off the shelf" manifold as such, but jabbasport (http://www.jabbasport.com) had their own designed and built for the IHI conversions they offer.
There are a few companies doing stronger rods like JE, whether they offer different compression i couldnt say, but im pretty sure the 225hp engines use a slightly lower ratio.
Im sure Bill will be along soon as he's looking at compression on his own car

A Garret T4 on a 1.8? are you sure?
I hope all you are planning is drag racing it, cause it's going to be rubbish below, oh, about 7500krpm!:p
if you want to stick with thw garret range a T3, with 063 A/R and 50trim compressor, and a 0.63 A/R and clipped blades 55trim turbine (max 155krpm) should be good for about 400bhp on a 1.8 engine. but to get any response then you'll really need some sort of anti-lag system or nitrous / compound superchargeing. (former requires Myram shafted T3, £3k a pop(sometimes literally!))
I think that bill's car is probably a nice comprimise, driveable yet powerful, with another 30 0r 40 bhp availible from increase chargecooling, water injection and perhaps cams (cams will come at the expense of the boost threshold creeping up rpm range)
remote wastegates are availible, typically from HKS for approx £350, i have a bentley turbo remote wastegate on my car
CR is a big decision, depends upon your fuel grade, with water injection and 98 ron ONLY, i think leave it at 9.5 to 1 for good response and thermal efficiency.

Lets just say lag won't be a problem ;)
Now how much am I talking for just a turbo and suitable manifold for one of these engines then? No need for extra mapping etc leave that to me.
The turbo you just outlined sounded very much like an Escort Cosworth Big Turbo item? Except using an external wastegate.

IHI turbo.
Roller bearing jobbie.
Jabbasport supplied and mapped on their bespoke manifold.

And to be cheeky how much is just the manifold and turbo?
