can anyone help? does anyone make a replacement panel filter yet for the beezer cupra. on past cars have used oil based ones, but read somewhere, some one suggested using foam for turbo engines no possibility of leakage of oil down intake pipe.
to be honest first time had a turbo, haven,t a bloody clue about them. any thoughts!!!!!!!!!!
Ram Air do one I think. Zboyd can tell you more.
oi Z
Yeah but the Ram Air is only for the Golf Gti version or Leon version of the 1.8 20VT, the beeza version has a smaller air box so the filter wont fit.
Im unsure whether there is a panel filter available at the moment.
Sorry i cant help

Jetex have one....K+N are working on one....RamAir need a donor car for one.....PiperCross have an induction kit but not panel filter.
SO take ya pick my friend!

I used to have one for my 8v cupra, and all the oily goop would congregate in the middle and drip onto in inside floor of the airbox. Bloody nuisance to clean.

Thats why some of us have still to fit some sort of aftermarket filter onto our 20VT's...too much oil.
Mark F recently fitted a RamAir panel into his Leon....even he accepted the fact the filter out of the box had WAYYYY tooo much oil on it. He removed most of it though before using it..and so far..its doing its job with no probs.

Thanks all for your replies on this. Sounds like it,ll have to either a jetex or a jetex cheers:D
just checked my ibiza with vag-com, cause having some problems with limp mode (boosts only 0.5bar sometimes). And AWOT, I got:
17536 - Fuel Trim: Bank 1 (Mult): System too Lean
35-10 - - - Intermittent
dadaa, f...... MAF sensor. Be really careful when washing/oiling your air filter. I have K&N and it was working just fine, I cleaned it about 1 week ago and put very little filter oil on it. But it was too much for this weak maf sensor. byebye another 250£
I seem to remember someone saying forget replacement air filters on a Leon Cupra. Is the Ram Air one the one to go for?
Does it make much difference - smoothness/throttle response/power increase?
Ive noticed a marked increrase in throttle response, and the car feels smoother, its even helped alieviate some of the symtoms of the cars hesitancy.
But fit one with caution, i for example made sure mine was well wiped down, cause the amount of retention oil they use on the foam filter is pretty daft, it was pratically dripping with the stuff, its no wonder people have MAF problesm with that amount of oil floating about in the airbox.
My advice is if your going for one, make sure you get a rag and wipe off all the excess oil, and give the foam a good wipe too, so as to soak up some of the extra oil sat on the surface.
Then after a few days of driving with the car, just check it again to make sure no residue has collected in the airbox, if it has wipe that up too, and give the filter another wipe down.
This should go some way to preventing you having a problem.
IM also looking down the line of an induction kit, i see that Star Performance have just started advertising a stainless steel gauze style induction kit that requires no oiling, and also is strong too, as some induction kits have been know to be sucked inside out. :)
Ive just emailed Jim about the Leon and any details he can give me or price.

Oh look...someone having MAF problems after fitting an Induction kit that uses retention oil.......how strange????
Never heard that problem before.......
Anyway, Mark, already looked into the steely type of filters, cos a fellow beeza cupra owner was moaning about the car not making a damn noise!!!
This time...i've been informed that the car's ECU does NOT like induction kits...due to the fact they have an unstable surrounding of air at the filter. Inside a housed one (like std)...the air is stable..and the ECU is set for this. If it senses an unstable surrounding of air (how it does this i don't know), it can throw a wobbly (safe mode being activated probably).
Just sharing some info with you guys as usual.
But do feel free to test them though! Cos i might have one if there are no major problems!
Lee
Thanks for the info Mark.
Flaky electronics, if the parts were good to start with they wouldnt fail.
The problem isnt induction kits, oil, or filters, its badly designed electronic parts.
Ive even heard MAF sensors get put into cars, broken already, or they are damaged in transit they are so fragile.
Seems to me that the thing that needs sorting is the flimsy MAF sensor.
The more complicated you make a thing the easier it is to foul up the works. :p
Lee did you go to a school to be that sarcastic :D
Not arsed if it makes a noise, if it increases the airflow, and generates some horsepower, or just smoothens throttle and looks good under the bonnet, it can be as quiet as a mouse for all i care.

hehehe..hey Mark!
Ermm.....the public opinion seems to be that the Ibiza 20Vt is just too quiet to be a hot hatch..and so people either want some induction noise, farty noises from the dumper, turbo roar...or exhaust bark!
With unbelievable luck...i can't have any of that!!!
Yep..totally agree the MAF seems to be a pile of CACK!
I'll just save up for a different car now....one i can fit all the above to without problems!

Sometimes i have to shake my head in disbelief with some of the the things reading on these forum boards. you lot make the seats sound like early made skodas with the problems you are getting. are they really made that BADLY considering they are from the VW stable (renown durability),or is because we are tweaking with them.!!!!!!!!!! got to sadly admit to beeing a vauxhall GTE fan before this car .and never had any problems from the engine side, especially from playing around with the induction side. (used to have one of the very last made old style toledos aswell) fitted a panel replacement airfilter with no problems at all. Why are the seats throwing up gremlins now!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
what has changed!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Its not the engines they are bomb proof, its the little electronics they are now adding to cars to make them drive better, and i suppose in the ideal world they dont want people tweaking with them in the first place.
This engine is just about used in everything in VAG stable nowadays, including the not so unreliable Skoda, so i dont think they'd all be using it if it wasnt reliable.
The earlier cars you speak of all had engines that didnt solely rely on sensors and Engine Management systems. and to be honest i wish they'd go back to this approach as working with computers i know how chips are prone to crashing, breaking, heat and cold extremes, all things a car has to deal with dayd to day, but computers and electronics dont have to, but if they do are made a hell of lot better.
If you check out other forums with more modern cars, you'll probably find thoguh that these types of issues are cropping up not just on VW's but anything with a computer orientated engine.
GTE's and old Toledo's were a little more crude under the bonnet, but i wont argue they probably didnt suffer from issues like this, but i bet they were'nt half as reliable as this engine is mechanincally in comparison even if your's run well.
Modern engines have taken a leap for the better and in some respects a leap for the worse, mechanics, need to be electricians and computer technicians nowadays, half the time they dont know what to do with a spanner. :D
It's a shame the Computer Industry don't take as much care with build quality etc, as some others do. If cars were as unreliable as PCs, then we'd never go anywhere in them...

Too many gizmos to get it all talking the right way at the right time 100% of the time - hence gremlins even when bog stock.
It is'nt just Seats though its all VAG cars... they aint as reliable as the hype would have you believe. Ask my mate who got rid of his Polo Gti because it drove in jerks and spasms... VAG5051 never found a fault but his car sucked... fly by wire 1.6 ltr16v - Yuk!

Had no probs with cars for years. Apart from a slight buzzing sound from the rear, Leon Cupra's been problem free so far (touch wood). 3 previous Impreza Turbos gave me 7+ years of hassle free motoring, and assorted Pug GTIs/Citroen ZX 16vs gave me no great trouble either. :)
Now, computers...
