was disapionted to find out today that my immobiliser isn't thatcham approved, been arguing with tesco over my insurance, spoke to james at rusty's where i bought it,james is contacting seat uk for me.
i ring to get a quote from steve at severn auto systems who did my ibiza cat 1 alarm,he gave me the thatchham helpline number,i call them tell the the year and model of my cordoba, the lady replies"sorry sir the imobiliser wasn't given a thatcham 2 till 1999"
so in effect my car isn't covered for theft.so a few pionts i'd like to pass on/questions.
1.if tesco knew this from the off why did they insure me?
2.did SEAT change the immobilsier on the 99 models?(if not then can the thatcham be backdated so to speak)?
3.has anyone got a 93-98 cordoba and is blissfully unaware that they may not be covered for theft?

with the prospect now fading for a while of new ARB'S you could say i am mightily pissed off, found an imobilser for 60 notes but it isn't cat2 unless fitted by a pro:mad:

My insurance on my wifes car was by Norwhich Direct who have my wifes 98 8v Ibiza on thier approved list.
It may not be Thatcham 1 approved but the Seat alarm immobiliser has passed insurance company accreditation of some form.
Her insurance is £394 fully comp parked on drive myself as other named driver..no current convictions

I insured mine with Admiral for the last year or 2 and just ticked the box for 'manufacturer supplied alarm and immobiliser'. No probs. £700, now 24, 2 (or 3) yrs no claims, garaged, 10k miles social and commuting, no points no convictions.

Mine's an R '97 Cordy. I asked the dealership whether it was Thatcham approved and they said they've never been asked that before, not on the 16V Ibiza or Cordoba! Mind you, they had only sold 2 2.0 16V's before mine!

They checked their data records for me and said that they had no record of it being Thatcham approved, but didn't know for sure. So rather than f*** about, I just had my Concept 50 moved from my Uno Turbo over to the Cordy, and had the headlamp activation done. I've also got a second siren under the bonnet (one of Clifford's 6 tone generators), do you can't not hear it when it goes off! :D

I reckon it's best to stay with the security experts anyway. Some cars may well be Thatcham approved, but if your car's your pride and joy, it's wise to invest in security to protect your assetts. In an ideal world we could leave the keys in the ignition. Now they're willing to open your car door and stick a knife in your face to get out! Where's the jam sandwich when you want 'em then?!

That's odd Jason, because mine is a 97 16v and I'm insured with Tesco. I got an alarm fitted that uses the standard immobiliser to make a cat1 system. The fitters gave me a certificate to say the standard immobiliser IS thatcham cat2.
But my car is obviously now insured as cat1 equiped.

As has been said before, Tesco are cr@p, and everyone gets different info off them. As soon as my year is up, I'm going back to direct line, who I'll stay with forever!

Guess that confirms it then. It ain't Thatcham approved.

Jase, I'd have a look at your legal situation. If they've advised you that your car is Thatcham approved and insured you as such, they should uphold their agreement with you regardless of the reality that the standard security is not approved. They have access to this data and more. If they can't get it right, they're at fault.

In my opinion, insurance companies get away with blue murder through the smallest technicality. They should be held accountable for incorrect details on their part. I'd fight it mate.

Let us know 'ow ya get on.

Mine's an S 98 Cordy 16v.

No probs with insurance companies. Factory fitted alarm & immobiliser are NOT Thatcham approved - but the insurance companies have said (like jason) they have passed some type of approval. Never been asked to fit a Cat 1 or 2 alarm. Was with AXA, last year NU and now eSURE.

Fully comp protected NCD etc - £335. My car is covered because they ALL accept the factory fitted equipment.

PS on point 3) - my mate has his own alarm company. He's certified by trade bodies and Police/council. He can get me a CAT 1 alarm for about £20. BUT because he's not in the motor trade, even tho he can supply a valid certificate - the insurance companies won't accept it.

Bunch of wan*ers - the lot of them

I've just got an online quote from directline. For my cupra sport, they now want me to fill in the make/model of alarm on the website. I didn't have to do that 3 months ago. Problem is, it's £100 cheaper than 3 months ago :(

AFAIK, the immobiliser IS the same, but was not passed by Thatcham until (May?) '99. As such, only cars BUILT after (May?) '99 are Thatcham 2 approved. I mention "built" because we all know what a minefield this can be - there's often a good while between build date and first registration date...

Doesn't really help much Jase, but there you go...

cat 2 fitted yesterday
tesco 1/2 hour phone call this morning, lots of questions,no real answers.the girl i spoke to actually agreed wtih me,have taken the adress from her of the offices and a letter is being draft.
i think that they haven't lived up to the policy, and if my car hadn't got the required system why did they give us a policy in the first place,we took the policy out in march and its taken till just under a fortnight ago for them to get round to telling us about it,what if the car had been twoc'd inbetween time??i've lso asked why i was paying for fully comp and only getting part of the cover?
not a happy bunny at the mo,100 odd quid out of pocket for the immobiliser and the feeling i've been taken for a ride.

tesco insurance??i won't spell it out:mad:
