Just thought id post something as a newbie, these are things that ive done on all my cars, and they have all got to high miles, and have run superb and smooth.
OIL FLUSH
Before changing the oil I would recommend an oil flush, some people argue it can move sludge around, but ive never had a problem, and id recommend using it, then changing oil every 5k.
You can get Wynns from Halfords, but the best is Forte which you can get off ebay.
ADDITIVES
I had a single point injection golf, which had the single injector ultrasonically cleaned, so I know how they should work. On my own SEAT Ibiza I bought some Forte Fuel Treatment, again off ebay, i also recommended to a friend who was impressed with it. Its about £14 in total but is well worth it, cleans everywhere the fuel goes and particularly noticeable when accelerating, it must really clean out the injectors.
THROTTLE BODY
This is my favourite, if you disconnect the large rubber hosing going into the throttle body youll probably see the butterly flap, and probably a lot of black crap on there, get some throttle body cleaner aerosol, spray the flap, and then manually open it (using the cable pulley) and spray loads of the stuff into the TB. You can use a toothbrush inside.
One issue is it may take a while to start, or non start as it can foul up the spark plugs, but this is an excuse to remove them and clean them. When it does start usually following is a large black cloud from your exhaust, all the crap from the TB and exhaust recirculation will come out.
Lastly its a good idea to get a friend to keep the revs at about 3k and spray into the TB, do this until no smoke comes out.
SHOULD BE NICE AND SMOOTH AFTER THESE.
