View Full Version : Intermittent loss of power on TDI?

One of my friends has a 1.5 year old VW Golf TDI (I know, not a SEAT but I guess the engine is the same, and you lot are a friendly helpful lot and might be able to help :))

Anyway... the engine intermittently looses power. This generally happens during long journeys at random intervals. Basically you are driving along and suddenly the power goes and it is near impossible to go over 2k rpm even with the foot flat to the floor. This carries on for the rest of the journey. The problem didn't occur before the car had it's first service, might just be a coincidence.

The car has been in and out of the VW garage under warranty, each time they say they replaced something and the problem just comes back.

They currently have had the car for over a week now and one of the technicians has been using it as a daily driver. He confirmed that there is a problem but can not find the fault.

Anyone heard of this problem before?

Anyone know of what happens if the garage can't fix a problem under warranty?

Many thanks!

Nick

Ignition coil perhaps. Had a dodgy one on an old car of mine. Sometimes it would be fine but other times it would show up and leave you really short of poer just when you needed it. Difficult to rev the car or get any revs in it when it flairs up.

edc.

Should I point out the distinct lack of spark ignition systems in diesels just now, or wait 'til later? :dunno:

;)

Not heard of this issue - might be worth a question on TDIClub.com? Car could be going into limp mode?

It's late and I'm tired. It's been one of those days where all your concentration has been sapped.

I had a rover 420 SLDi (not VW i know) which had same problem.

Rover has same injection system.

There is a sensor which detects turbo boost pressure and advances pump. It could be this.

Or the MAF sensor could be Knackered.

Both give same problem.

Hope this helps.

Could be a MAF fault ... the other possible is a loose intercooler hose. A lot of these have been reported on uk-mkivs.net, especially on PD150 Golfs, not heard of any on other PD TDis (the 150 has a front-mounted cooler, so different pipework). Apparently the clip holding the hose to the 'cooler can get loose and cause boost leakage.

Most likely the MAF is going. Could also be the valve that controls turbo pressure (up against firewall). Had a similar problem on my 110 a few yrs back.

Many thanks for all of your replies. The VW garage have told my friend that it is most likely the turbo. They still have the car, and it has taken two weeks of fault finding to figure this out. Even then they aren't 100% sure.

Don't worry it took a year and a half to find mine.:(

So, PRC, what sort of problems were u experiencing, i fear the same might be wrong with my 110 also, and why did it take them so long to find?

Cheers

My problem was as follows:
Normal driving for an hr or 2. Then if for some reason I had to idle for a while (traffic or traffic light) after pulling away from light or traffic the car would go limp. Pull over and turn car off for 5 minutes and presto everything was normal again. Didn't always happen, about once every 3-4 weeks towards the end.
Problem was that it didn't leave any fault codes on ECU. Started when car was 8 months old (50000km), finally fixed by 150000km.

Sounds like a similar thing that is happening on my mates Golf TDI. What did the cause of the problem turn out to be?

I'm not sure what really solved the problem as they changed a few things during the last (and successful attempt). The turbo and pressure control valve + tuning the injector pump where all done.
