The Škoda Octavia WRC of Jan Kopecký and Filip Schovánek in last weekend's Rallye Matador Tatry in Slovakia, doing over 180km/h around a flat left, lost control and hit a pillar the rolled into a field.

Both survived, driver with head injuries and co-driver with a broken leg, both should make a full recovery.

Check out the cage noting the safety cell is almost completely in shape.

Possibly the worst rally car smash I've seen...unfortunately between this and spectator issues yet another reason why I can't see why rallying is still allowed. I know there's plenty who will defend it and the Rally games make good computer games .. but modern rallying just pushes man machine and pace notes to the limit...Having said that I wouldn't want circuit racing banned and banning Rallying on public roads would be a step towards that.

Ah, you see if everything was 100% safe, we would have very boring lives and man / woman (interted for my safety :D) would not develop stuff.

Plus most rallies have a pretty good safety record anyway.

Pretty full on. Cage did its job! All credit to the strength and build quality of the work and works type cars these days.

Clubmans cars are slightly different!

What, no Skoda jokes yet?????

Personally I'd hate to see rallying on the road banned, in fact I think it's a real shame that we can't have it in the UK. I'm by no means a rally-geek but I can watch tarmac stages all day long. I'd rather see F1 banned.

Yes there are spectator issues and it is absolutely disgraceful that stages of an international event have had to be cancelled because of poor marshalling (of the spectators), but that can be addressed. Nobody forces the drivers to do it and they will soon say so if they start to feel it's getting dangerous - just like they did last year (I forget where) but loads of them finished one day saying that the stages were too dangerous.

These pictures actually show how much is being done to keep it safe.

I personaly don't want to see rallies banned but what I meant was I can't understand how 'the authorities' haven't banned it...
mind you where do you stop..
strangely Is it Rugby thats responsible for the most disabilities every year?

I have been to the catalunya rally and it was mental, the things people do to get a good photo!

Apparently its even worse in portugal, those guys look like they have lost the plot!. There are far more people into rallying than boring F1, just look at the barcelona grand prix, its always a bore, (this year excepted);)

OUCH!!:(

Just gonna nip out and weld a few more braces into my cage!

The steering wheel intrusion is a little bit scary, and you can see the result of running huge wheels on a car never designed for them, with the intrusion into the lower section of the A pillar that has kinked the door bars.

The weird thing is that all the exterior damage is actually a good thing, it means lots of little impacts. not just one big one, certainly things like the rear roof and boot collapsing are not a problem, but it's taken a serious wack in the front first. With a modern WRC cars there's not a lot of space underbonnet and hence engine / transmission tends to be in normal crumple zone of std FWD car.

I'm not sure the door bars are kinked are they? look more like the padding has crumpled?

I know a guy who could put that car back on the road :(
Affectionately known to me and my mates as 'Hacker John'.

I've seen cars in that state going into his shop, then 2 weeks later coming out 'looking' new, but I wouldn't want to get in one!

More people are killed or injured in the UK fishing than in all form forms of motorsport. Work that one out!

Whilst that maybe true, i suspect it's because a lot more people go fishing than do motorsport. I suspect in percentage terms it's more dangerous to be in motorsport. BUT, we all know the risks, on every event we start you know what could happen, but the fun and enjoyment outweigh the risks.

Taking all reasinable precautions is still a requirement, but i would much rather crash my rally car than my road car.

Apparently not, proportionatly motorsport is safer. It's got a lot to do with old guys having heart attacks in romote locations, exposure and casting lines onto power cables. Not to mention dieing of boredom... In motorsport the risks are recognised and mitigated, hence marshals, doctors, rollcages, fire extingushers (except AFFF!) crash helmets etc.

Can you imagine the scene, 2 old codgers sat on the river bank, one of them hooks 440kV and leaps around with sparks flying off his head, 2nd bloke just mumbles "looks like daves caught another big'un!"

Ah what fun!:p

Don't even get me started on the fire extinguisher fiasco!

Back in the old days a freon extinguisher would last for ever, then work propely and put the fire out, Sure it was bad for the environment, but the proportion of gases escaping from the couple of car extinguishers let off every year must pale into insignificance beside industrial usuage!
Now we have poxy AFFF ones, it would be better to piss on the average car fire than use one, especially if it's ever been shaken, which in a rally car is every time you drive the bloody thing!

Sod the environment, if my arse is on fire i don't care if we gonna get 0.0000000000000000001% more global warming if i use a freon extinguisher!

Rant mode off

:p

Yours is not quite clubmans - factory built type car. You havent seen the welding on the cage in the pug! Never trust anyone but yourself! Mind you I must have faith and trust to sit in the car at competitive speed with Dean! I'm sure ours is fine and I trust Dean 100% in the car!
