I used to own a 2001 51 reg Leon that came with a tape player - I changed the head unit to a Sony CD/MP3 player and the airbag warning light came straight on after. I tried changing it back to the tape player to no avail. When I took it into the garage (for a different problem) I was told that it was probably a sensor related to the stereo; however, two different garages tried turning the light off but no joy. I sold the car a month ago (with light on) and I've bought my new Leon, an 04 reg, that has a factory fitted single disc CD player. I'd like to change it to a MP3 player but I don't want the same situation to happen again. Has anyone else had this happen?

i'm not sure how the sterio links to the airbags

it seems that this isnt unheard of, all it would need is the airbag light turning off by the dealers, or vag-com, but as you said above they couldnt do it.

it could have been a chaiffing of wires or something that caused it to stay on?

Well, one garage said that it was a sensor, another said that it was the actual airbag - but strange how it came on as soon as the unit was changed.

I do remember there was a spare wire that went into the tape player that didn't go into the new CD player - but even when this was put back into the tape deck it made no difference.

I've never taken a car to a proper dealer garage - too expensive I'm afraid.

I do wonder if the wiring for a tape deck is different to a CD player and also whether these things could have been addressed in the 3 years between the two cars - but I'm loathe to find out the hard way

Oh, and apparently the airbag cables are very close to the stereo ones. Or something. I never even so much as hit a curb in that car so I don't think I knocked them that way.

Did your Cupra come with a tape deck?

Yes originally then i put in a pioneer, then replaced that with the cd version of the aura, out of a later Leon.

Hmm. I just don't want to run the risk of it happening again. It seemed to coincidental that the light would come on as soon as the car was started after having it's player changed. I'd only had it a few hours as well :-( lol! Maybe I'll just stick with the CD player I have, the Aura one. It's just the bass isn't so impressive as in the other Leon, possibly because that player had different settings for different music types *shrugs*.

I suppose I could fit a sub in the back - do these hook into the bog standard CD players?
