View Full Version : Gearbox problem on 16V

Ok, my first REAL problem (not caused by me anyway) happened last night.
I was caning it around as I was in a hurry, and after a while, it became difficult to change into second or third. A bit later and it simply wouldn't go into second. I had to stop the car, wait for a minute then try again. It went in ok after this.

Anbody else had problems selecting gears on a 16v?
Reckon changing the gearbox oil would help, or is it a clutch probmlem?

I quite often need to push pretty hard to get it to shift well into 3rd.

Could be your cables?

maybe the outers are worn & they're sticking..

try not to force it too hard though, you may end up snapping it & then you'll be stuck

Possibly clutch... Is 1st difficult to engage from stationary? do you feel the car "shunt" a bit when engaging?

If not, possibly the selector forks are becoming deranged.

Bill, I usually get a bit of a crunch when I select 1st yes. Is it new clutch time?

I get crunch occasinally when going to reverse. I think the cables may be a bit slack in mine. I do find I change down through the gearbox all the time though (partly cos my pads have been dead and I been trying to save them).

Since I changed the gearknob though the 'solid' feeling seems to have increased dramatically.

Stu/Utter_hatred had a gearbox problem similar to yours and I believe it was a selector problem. He did everything like changing/adjusting cables etc etc but his is fixed now.

If you select 3rd or 2nd before 1st from stationary does it slot in much easier?

If so... I would say it does sound like clutch I'm afraid.

That's a shame cos I get a nice shunt when reverse is awkward:(

Dunno, I've never tried. I'll give it a shot at lunchtime and see.

One thing I just remembered though. I always leave the car in third when stationary (in case the handbrake fails) and noticed that this is the first car I've ever had that you can't put it in third (when the engine is off) without pressing the clutch. Is that normal?

Yep, me too! Can't be @rsed changing the clutch till I'm back in England. Just hope it lasts another 2 months, which it should.

Hey don't know if its a bit late in the day for this advice, but I had the same problem getting my 16v into 3rd gear and also crunching into reverse, it was starting to drive me mad, everyone I asked said it was the syncro going or your standard clutch cable problems, but to my amazement two months ago I decided it was time to change the g/box oil and bingo problem sorted (shock) I havn't had a problem since.. very cheap very easy job done ! NICE

reversing is always a pain as the revs through transmission need to slow first before engaging reverse, give it a second or ease it into reverse slowly, this works on mine, as far as second or third is concerned, that was a problem on my first gearbox, it was completely replaced by seat under warranty after 20k but its going again when putting it into second gear at any sort of revs (over3k) it crunches but goes, this makes accelerating embarassing if doing it while others are in earshot!!!
i was told its just the baulk ring that needs replacing.

It's getting worse....

It's now almost impossible to put it into second above 5000 rpm in first. Also changing down from third same problem at speed. It just won't go in, like the gear isn't there. Bigger crunch on selecting first and third, always.

I think I'll take Big Bones advice and change the gearbox oil soon, if that doesn't work then the clutch and clutch cable.

How hard is it to change this baulk ring? Never heard of it

Well, fourth and fifth gears are fine, but I don't like them as much!! :D

Maybe a gear selector problem like Stu/Utter hatred had?

Its a g'box to bits job I'm afraid.
Selector folks and baulk rings/synchro hubs...
AutoT do a good job on g'boxes... (02380 ******)
Not going to be cheap tho, unless you have warranty on your motor.

Good luck

I seem to recall it meant dropping the exhaust but don't remember whetther this was posted on the forum or whether it was on email or even whether it was in conversation. He either lost the odd number gears or the even ones - I think it was 1, 3 and 5 also maybe. A new selector/linkage bit did the trick. One of those ETKA diagrams should show which bit.

only joking mate, mines in tomorow to have it inspected under warranty,3rd gear input from any other gear is shite, and the fact that i press the ciggie lighter whilst doing so tells me that i need new cables, along with the abs, starter and why the cat keeps banging off the bottom of the car.oher than that great car:o

chin up matie, i dnt think thers such a thing as a 100% satisfied owner of any marque, theres always small niggles in everyones mind.
out of interest jase, open your bonnet, and tighten the bolt that secures your selector on the gearbox (wobble it as you tighten to make sure its fully level and tight), the bit that looks like a handle, if its loose it leaves loads of play, once thats nice and tight the gear lever feels a lot more secure.
