View Full Version : sound system question??
I have put a vibe sub nice and tidy in my boot along with a spare amp, and a new head unit. the spare amp is 2 run some 6x9's. has any 1 got any other way of fitting the 6x9's appart from cutting the parcel shelfe and putting them in there. if so what have you done and maby even a pickture of where you have installed them.
cheers math
Usually, mounting 6x9 in a parcel shelf with a sub in the boot will result in distortion of the sound coming from the 6x9's
The air movement caused by the sub will act against underside of the 6x9 cones.
You'd probably be better off amping some components in the front doors.
If you set on the 6x9's then to be honest I've not seen them mounted in anything but the parcel shelf.
Could have a search around www.icecavern.com for examples.
(warning :- you might get a slighty flamed for suggesting using 6x9's ;) ;) not the most popular speaker in Car Audio circles )
You'd be better off amping the fronts as thats where you sit so that is where you would want the best sound.
If your intent on the 6" x 9" then get a spare shelf and cut them into that.
i have my 6x9s in the boot, and contrary to what most people say,
a sub in the boot does NOT distort the 6x9s,as a matter of fact;
i have 1 of the top subs on the range, an alpine type X 12" (1000W RMS) and i have alpine type S 6x9s on the parcel shelp, and im tellin you,the sound is crystal clear at full volume.if ur sitting in the back, not only do ur insides get a nice bass massage, but you can hear the vocals/treble perfect to the point your ears will pop!

Hear what you're saying mate, but you can't argue with physics - at high volume there is enough air being pushed around to cause problems. That's not opinion.
As for what to do with the 6x9s you could fabricate your own stealth shelf for about £15-20 worth of mdf, carpet and glue.
yeah i know my physics, and i do agree it does affect it logically.but as for the actual output, its not something noticably different.physics teaches you that in the real world nothing can be ideal.there is always a small taint in everything, but in this case, its not something terribly noticable even if on paper it IS being affected...if u get what i mean.
my point is,dont trip over 6x9s + sub,it sounds good regardless.

Then with all due respect, you've never listened to a decent setup in a car. ;)
Any decent dealer/installer will be able to demonstrate a car to you which will change your thoughts on 6x9's.
Not just talking about lack of distortion, talking about imaging, depth, width and height of sound stage. None of which you can get with speakers that are behind you. Check out www.icecavern.co.uk for details of some simple yet mind blowing setups.
have had the 6x9 in the parcel shelfe in plenty of other cars and have allways had good sound from them with the sub in the boot, just dident fancy cutting them into the pacel shelfe this time. so thaught maby sum 1 had maby managed to mount them behind some pannel or something in the back of the car.

Not sure what other panels you've got really. Not a lot other than doors seats and parcel shelf in the back of a Leon.
Souldn't think you'll get them into the rear doors without the inner skin getting in the way. You'd end up having to hack holes in the metal which could cause you all sorts of problems.
Not sure if the shelves either side of the parcel shelf are big enough either, but again you'd need to hack them to bits.
I think your best bet would be to find a 2nd parcel shelf to hack. One didnt sell on ebay the other day. £10 starting bid. Not too much to pay really. Either that or a trip to the srappy to look for one.
Cheers,
Steve
ok cheers mate. into the parcel shelfe looks like they will go then
