Just reinforce the standard shelf with a length of MDF, I've done this for people before and it works just as good as the stealth shelf jobs...

That was the other idea I forgot to mention in chat room last night. however using foam/mdf/fibreglass will produce a great shelf.

so how exactly would i modify my standered shelf?
is there a guide any where?
Take your standard shelf cut out holes for the speakers in the indentations.
Take a piece of MDF and cut out matching holes. cover the MDF in some accoustic carpet ( to make it look nice. )
screw the mdf to the underside of the shelf. mount the speakers on the MDF.
cover the top of the shelf in accoustic carpet.
hey presto
1 reinforced stealth shelf.

That's it...
The other thing I was thinking was filling the airspace in the standard shelf ( if it's a MK4 Ibiza ) with expanding foam to make it solid... You'd have to be very carefull and fill it up a small amount at a time to not buckle the shelf but it might do the job...

ok ive decided due to the fact that im lazy and there seems to be 2 much work involved in getting the shelf to look nice, pivot properly and generally be half decent to modify the one i have.
exactly what do i screw the mdf 2? just in to the shelf?
wont the screw come thru the top?
