Be careful using K&N's

Reason, They're oil coated which has really bad effects on the MAF.

Air flow meter in case you didn't know.

The oil particles stick to the film in the flow meter and hence it stops working correctly which leads to,

Lack of power

Turbo not spinning up right

£250 approx hole in your bank account.

Sorry to be bearer of bad news - not always the case but I know of a few cases, that's why i don't have a K&N on mine. Just tuning box.

So far so good - but thanks for the advice././

What diffence did you notice when you fitted the tunning box a kinda woooooh or Bl**dy hell !?!

Yep, get the K&N off asap and clean your MAF, if u want a higher flow filter get a Green Filter.

You will trash your MAF otherwise. check the posts on Freds TDI Forum on how to clean it, and also the huge number of people whove had them go wrong on the VW TDI lump.

yes, like a wild stallion it is,

traction in wet, whats that?, lets go for a spin !!

traction control on overtime.

Got mine set on number 5 of 7 at moments till I get bored, which after 6 months of large grins hasn't happened yet.

Aaah I'm missing it already.
Refusing to drive car until I've got the chip installed:cry:

As for MAFs, I think they're just too fragile anyway, they seem to go no matter what filter you've got on there.

Stu B

set on 5 of 7 ?? I take that setting is inside the tunning box then/././.

std one

don't want a K&N they're bad news and don't really want to spend cash,

According to box makers it is designed on std air filter and to leave alone.

as for settings, yes can adjust box by changing pin configuration

between 0 and seven - uses binary pin config with jumper pins rather than having a pot.

Beezer when do you get the chip then.... - & What else is in the project plan then.......

BeezerDiesel

Chip hopefully tomorrow.
Next mods.? Don't know yet as this was only supposed to be a cheapish runabout to ween me off of Performance cars and seems to be turning into as big a money pit as always.

Got some more wheel spacers sat in the kitchen waiting to go on, and am on the lookout for some Ibiza or 6N Polo sports seats to go in, but I suppose the intercooling will take my attention before long. I've got a new kitchen arriving sometime so had better occupy myself on that really.

How does the Leon's performance compare to the Alhambra's now?
My neighbour used to run a 115 PD Bammer as a Taxi and it shifted remarkably well.
The Leon should have a better power/torque to weight ration than it now.

beezer, where did u get ur wheel spacers from and for how much?

Stu B

Beezer - fitted the box at lunchtime at work - So I can only wait till trip home........
But Alhambra was kick ass from day 1! - Leon always felt slower hopefully that has been balanced now...

Raceland uk, cost £30 including vat and postage, 15mm only got a small supply of 4 stud ones left as they've discontinued them.
Funny things they're two pieces, the spacer ring and a seperate hub locating collar so as the wheel sits nicely on instead of an expensive one piece machined disc, they'd make quite a pretty ornament!
Need to locate some longer wheel bolts next so will have to 'phone the local Motorsports place when I've got the time and inclination.

Chip not being fitted today now :worry: so I've got to spend all weekend driving a half modified car.

Well, after the inital woooooooooooooooooooooooooo its settled I think, however I do seem to have smoke, especially on big push, but more when cold!
Trying to cruise at a steady speed is fun also... I guess its a bit of settling in time, & possibly just a minor turn down on the box its self??
Plus point though golf 130tdi, got a major shock Yeah !!!!!!! as I whiped him teheeee..

Now to learn when to use the power gain, so hence not loose my licence!!

So beezer, sounds good, do you have their website or contact details?

And do u think everyone would need longer wheel bolts? i hope my new locking ones which i just got from seat for my alloys will fit

UPDATE - i found their site and emailed them but they replied that they no longer make wheel spacers..... sigh.....

BeezerDiesel

Sorry ssStew meant to include phone number of Raceland uk on last post, speak to Clare on 01440 788 141.
You WILL need longer bolts [don't cost more than a couple of quid each] but if you have locking bolts just order six and make sure the locking bolts have at least a little purchase and torque them up at least once a week.

Stu B; maybe you will need to turn the box down a fraction then, but I never had any problems with smoke unless I'd only been using the car gently for a day or two and got a bit of soot build up which was then blasted out on hard acceleration next time the car got a work out. But this is a Diesel thing anyway [make sure you take your Diesel for a good thrash before MOT time to clear the soot for the emissions test, standard or not].
I could live with a bit of soot for extra ooomph and it reminds people that you're just in a humble Diesel!

beezer, when did u get ur wheel spacers? only claire emailed me and said the no longer manufacture wheel spacers. i might reply if u got them recently and say u got some and has she got any left.

Recently as in this week!
Currently running 8mm ones but needed WIDTH!

Unless I had the last ones of course, in which case I'll mount them on a plinth as they'll be worth millions in years to come as a piece of art! [You'll know what I mean if you see them!]

sssstew
23-05-2003, 16:08
do you want to sell ur 8mm wheel spacers?

do you think they're worth it? i guess 8mm is quite small

Stew

BeezerDiesel

My car is lowered a bit so sits okay with smaller spacers.
You can buy ones like them for less than a tenner at Motorspares places. [Universal fit]

When you phone Raceland ask for ones to fit a four stud VW GOLF then they will understand better!

Beezer.... i checked with them.. and check this.. you got the last set!! ya lucky git!

oh well, might try and find them from somewhere else later, if reichardsons can fix me engine today.

Well after tweeking the wee blue turnee thingy (Gotta be so careful with you guys) I think I have found where mine runs best... Should I say 4000rpm 125mph! - Little smoke, Mmmmmm ! Of course this was on a private road (not Ooops) !

BeezerDiesel

Glad the Box is living up to expectations, I still miss it.
Just done 400 miles with just the injectors and the fuel consumption is still hovering around the 40mpg mark, used to be 48+.
Any one thinking of uprating injectors I'd say don't bother unless you are after maximum power. They do give a nice smooth power delivery though, not too much more than standard at low rpm's but more power higher up the range than standard.
I'm wondering if there's a fault with my car somewhere?

careful mate, have a read of www.tdiclub.com

Injectors?!!!! Humble 90bhp.. tal;k explain.... Oh btw - 40mpg yeah NOT!!!!!!!! At mo its 230miles on 3/4 mark, thats 1/4 left ! Mmmmmm

Both my TDI's used to do 48ish mpg no matter how they were driven.
Since I fitted bigger nozzles on the injectors it's dropped to about 40 [and have had less]. Figures taken by brimming the tank and using the same pump quite often.

Nozzles - VanAaken supplied but likely Kerma ones, not very cheap to do it this way but VAD will spend a good long time setting them up for optimum performance vs. emissions.

Must have something to do with how I drive then >!< re lack of MPG!
