View Full Version : Compulsory Insurance excess

Hi All,

I'm getting quotes for a Leon FR TDI 170, and every insurer is now slapping on a compulsory excess. Is this something new? I've never had to pay this before. Is it because it's a sort after car?

Annoyingly, what looks like £150 excess (voluntary) ends up being £250-300 excess (voluntary and compulsory)

My current policy on a Mk1 Leon TDI 110 is voluntary only (£150), so I'm wondering whether it's worth paying the extra ~£100 to get the overall excess down to £150 (£0 voluntary, £150 compulsory with Direct Line).

Direct Line didn't make it clear what the compulsory excess was, so I ended up having a slightly heated arguement with them on the phone. They don't make it very clear, and a number of other companies have it hidden away under "click here to see your excess in detail" even though on the main page it still says £150 excess.

Has anyone else noted this?

Goot :)

:( I've seen this as well.Very sneaky. You look at the price they're quoting and think 'that's too good to be true'?.It usually is.Admiral,Elephant (same company) both use this little trick.

I've been with Direct Line before.I found them to be very helpful. And they don't use overseas call centres, which is nice!.
I always go for the base line cheapest option,(taking into consideration my odds on having to make a claim).Pay out as little as possible, and drive carefully!.

Yeah basically you have a standard excess on most policies, fully comp anyway, say £100. This is compulsory. Companies have now started adding a voluntary aswell. This can range from £50 up to £500. You used to have to ask for a voluntary excess to be applied, the idea was the more excess you applied the further the reduction in premium but as i say this was added at a request. Now its common in a lot of cases, particularly with younger drivers and high group rated vehicles that a voluntary is put on a standard and instead you have to ask for it to be removed. If your unsure of whats what ask for a premium breakdown and policy summary to review the excesses that are literally compulsory

What happens with a no fault claim? Would I have to pay anything?
Currently policy is £150 voluntary, £150 compulsory.

If I take my policy down to £0 voluntary, with a bit of haggling it's only going to cost be an extra £50 on top of my annual premium.

A no fault claim, I don't really want to have to pay out for the priviledge of someone damaging my car.

Even on a non fault claim and you go through your own Insurer, you still have to pay the total excess to the garage, But with a bit of luck you get your excess back if there is a full recovery from the third party,

there are a couple of ways this can work

I will bring Aimez possible reason in for not paying anexcess in a min but 99.9% of the time you will. Even if the claim is non-fault.

One, you car is damaged but repairable, you pay the excess to therepairer, your insurer will claim in back from th third party and is issued in a settlement check.

Two, your car may be wrote off by the Third Party, obviously in this case there will be no excess to pay.

Three, and possible why aimez paid no excess. The vehicle went in for repair, but by the time it had gone in, because the accident was that clear cut and liability had been admitted by the third party the claim had been settled and the excess was claimed and paid on hr behalf.

The best way of not paying an excess is to deal with a seperate accident management comapany and forgot about the legal cover offered with your insurance. Lets say you have legal cover now, this is basic, accident management cover provides a premium service that i far more convenient for you as the client.

In a non-fault situation as you say, they would pay the excess for you and recover from the Third Party at settlement. Courtesy cars are worked in groupings. Basically if you have a cupra, this is classed an "S6" (insurance jargon at our place) vehicle. This means you would get a courtesy car like a brand new passat, octavia, T5, not a micra. Legal cover is increase and you get a personal claim handler. Repairers are also much much better, not like Howard Basfords places. not sure if these are national but if you look in this section you will see there not a good place to go

All for £20, the same price as your standard insurers legal cover. Plus you dont have to chase them. You usual have asses to a database where you can see what they have done. Claims usually get chased by them every 2/3 days

hope this helps. anything else just ask

I must admit that accident management seems to be the way forward. Insurance companies do feck all for their clients other than try to screw them and not pay a bloody bean if they can get out of it. Next time I have a need for a claim, I ain't going anywhere near my insurance company for it, and I'm hoping that the other party is insured by a certain insurance company that arsed about with my last claim for 4 months before finally giving me a pittance of a settlement.
