Over four hours after the end of round 4 of the Holiday Inn SEAT Cupra Championship, race officials at Silverstone gave Gavin Smith a one second penalty, dropping him down to fourth and promoting Gordon Shedden to third.

Smith and Shedden fought a fantastically close race over 10 laps of the Grand Prix Circuit. Starting fourth on the grid, Gavin stayed ahead of Gordon (who had started from sixth) up until the final lap, having run nose-to-tail for many laps. With both cars lapping at an average speed of almost 90mph, Gordon’s red Scottish Sun Leon Cupra R overtook Gavin’s yellow Smith’s Hire Centre SEAT on the last lap, only for the Dublin driver to reclaim third place on the final corner.

Following the race, 11 out of the 17 Holiday Inn SEAT Cupra Championship drivers were ordered to report to the Clerk of the Course to give their views on a number of issues reported by trackside race observers.

Gavin said: “There was a bit of gap on the last corner and I went for it – it was a racing incident. It had been a very close race and Gordon had hit the back of my car a couple of times before and hit me quite aggressively on the cooling down lap
