Yes

they changed from the 150 to the 170 about 18 months ago (I think)

now superceded by a 1.8T with 180bhp

yep, this is true, they opted for the 1.8t 'cause the v5 was a touch thirsty, a real pitty i recon, as the v5 sounded like a quatty and had a nice layed-back torquey feel...:(

170hp 20V V5 is still available new - but as I understand it to be phased out now that the 1.8T is up and running in the UK.

And yes, I can confirm that given a quiet stretch of private motorway........they shift :D

I'm pretty sure the 1.8t will actually guzzle more during sprinted driving.

Yeah, I find this odd, everyone asks about the fuel consumption on the V5, but I am getting a respectible 37mpg at 90mph on the motorway....anyone care to compare that to a 1.8T ??

Incidentally, my 10V V5 would only turn in 33mpg on the same journey.

And yes, in respone to the original post, given a quiet stretch of private motorway..............they shift :D

whats the difference between the 10v and 20v V5's then? i'm confused!

Early V5's are quite cheap now (6k) and you get stacks of quality kit with them by the looks of it and they look great in black, I can see myself driving one on 19's with tints! :D

20 bhp.

The early 150bhp are 10V. I have had my 20V 3 weeks now, and whilst enjoying the car and the extra gadgets, I actually prefered the 10V.

Power delivery was spot on - smooth and refined. Where as the 20V is a lot more 'in yer face' - and of course having the extra valves means you need to rev it more to get it going. Similar to the 8V versus 16V debate I guess.

Cheers.

Oh i see! :)

So i wont be any better off really then by buying a 20v one, they are stilly pretty expenive so dont see the point in all the extra cash for the extra 20bhp.

The 10v ones seem to be fully loaded anyway with climate/4 air bags/leather/alcantara trim etc

I think you can chip either of them to get about another 20BHP can't you. In that case you could buy an earlier one and chip it to the power of the 20v, probably with better torque delivery too.

I love these cars. The only thing that stops me buying one is that I don't like the beige interior that comes in the black ones (and I would have to have a black one). Just personal preference though. The grey/black interior in the silver and blue ones is fantastically nice though.

There was one for sale near me with a full exhaust on it. It must have sounded sweet, although it was sold before I got round to finding out.

Yep, the 150bhp is still a right nice motor. The newer all power model has Sat Nav, auto wipers, auto dim rear view mirror, and TCS thrown in with the extra horses.

As mine is an early 170 (July 01), it still has foldy mirrors and memory seats which I believe were dropped soon after. :)

Yep, AMD can take care of that with a software fettle.

I have had my V5 for a year and I too love the V5 engine. I recently drove a 225 bhp TT and although it was faster I thought the engine was nowhere near as cultured as my V5.

Mind you the best I get out of mine on the motorway is 33mpg. It has only done 7k will it get better with miles?

i used to worry about my v5 fuel consumption but after modding it i get a respectable 33mpg on average so well pleased, i get more than my m8ts golf 1.8t and it feels a lot faster.

would you notice the 20bhp difference ? in normal driving im not so sure? previous modding experience has shown that you need to be in rally mode to feel a vast difference.
