I have been asked by a few people lately about mapping and AmD...

I will confirm (after speaking with Scott @ AmD) that they do continue to offer bespoke mapping for normally aspirated and forced induction cars. (Sporttek is an option on chipping at a price as well as their own developed programs)

So if you want your n/a car mapped, turbo car mapped etc they continue to offer this service.

Note: Don't expect any chipper/tuner to be too interested in finishing off someone elses installed upgrade, be it head, cams, exhaust etc.... as the likelyhood being that they might inherit a "problem" which is not caused by them, but would be expected to be fixed by them, as they would have touched it last and be deemed responsible. - This is a tuners nightmare.

This is made worse when you find there have been some bodges done by shop (a) and shop (b) are expected to make good the end product - your car mapped nice and properly for example. If you booked it in for a remap, thats what would be expected and charged for, but it would likely never be that straight forward, as fixing a fault would eat into the dyno time to RR the car...

the moral/advise here being if you can one stop shop for your upgrades, it is a good idea, as overall, it would more than likely work out easier and less hassle. Only one company accountable. (a) would blame (b) and visa versa for example.

regards
Bill

I did specifically ask AmD about them doing the mapping after I had some other mechanical engine mods done elsewhere. They seemed happy enough for me to do this but I did feel the need to ask in the first instance rather than roll up for an RR remap and slyly say I've had it cammed and flowed.

They did also note that if you are DIY'ing some bits (eg head)and are not as experienced as them or other experienced tuners then the gains they quote might not be achievable.

I know AmD have come in for some stick regarding their policy towards other tuners mods but in my opinion, they're spot on here. The problem isn't really with someone elses work, it's with customers who all "know my rights" but couldn't find their @rse with both hands as far as engines are concerned.

You can just see it coming :

"Amd charged me £800, just for a re-map - the robbing b@st@rds! They said X wasn't right but I don't believe them."

OR

"My car was running fine until AmD chipped it!"

all over every VAG-related forum on the Net. Is it really a surprise that they have to protect themselves?

Exactly... spot on.

Then again, why would you need a remap if the car hadn't been modded?

I know exactly where you're coming from, but if any given tuner will only map cars that they have perfomed all other mods on then they are closing themselves off to lots of work. I wouldn't use them for example.

In the case of AmD in particular I probably wouldn't anyway, primarily because they recon 944 turbo wastegates. Problem is the original wastegate design is a very poor one and they charge a lot more than other people will provide a reconned, modified one of better than standard design for a standard unit = rip-off to my mind.

they are very good at mapping i understand, but to me seem to charge alot for head/cam work.this i think is why people are more reluctant to get all the work done under one roof.cheap head and cams at one place, get it mapped at AMD,seems cost effective to me;)
