View Full Version : GUIDE: Fitting Dension Gateway 100 (or other iPod connector)

Some or all of this information may well be available elsewhere, but I couldn't easily find it when I wanted it and others have been seen to be asking how, so this is...
How to install the Dension Gateway 100 iPod connector (GW) to the standard OEM Leon Mk2 head unit (HU).
(A very similar procedure would apply for other iPod devices)
USUAL DISCLAIMER: I take no responsibility for any damage you may do to your car, your HU your ipod or yourself whilst following the info below. This merely documents what I did.
1. Turn off your HU and remove the keys from the ignition. I also waited until the MFD on the cluster display powered off (30 seconds after keys-out I think) before attempting removal.
2. Cut 4 strips of plastic from an old DVD case, and insert two into the slots underneath the HU display:
http://i805.photobucket.com/albums/yy333/leon-munkee/Removal1.jpg
and two more (one on each side) just underneath the blanking panels next to the climate controls (or under where the heated seat controls are if you have the winter pack):
http://i805.photobucket.com/albums/yy333/leon-munkee/Removal2.jpg
3. Push the stips at least 4 inches in (or until they stop), then very carefully work your way around the edge of the HU until it comes free. Mine had a couple of strips of double-sided adhesive behind the fascia as well, so was a little tricky to slide out. Be careful not use anything too sharp which could mark the fascia, HU or dashboard surround.:
http://i805.photobucket.com/albums/yy333/leon-munkee/Removal3.jpg
You can then remove your plastic strips.
4. Put the gear level into 2nd/4th/6th to move it out of the way and slide the HU out far enough to get to the rear quadlock connector:
http://i805.photobucket.com/albums/yy333/leon-munkee/Removal4.jpg
You shouldn't need to disconnect the remaining (aerial) cable.
5. Disconnect by pushing down on the clip and the bottom of the connector and pulling out the level.
6. Move the HU clear of the fascia:
http://i805.photobucket.com/albums/yy333/leon-munkee/Removal5.jpg
7. Connect up the quadlock connector to the car's wiring loom and the other end to the Dension box:
http://i805.photobucket.com/albums/yy333/leon-munkee/Fitting1.jpg
8. Push the wiring loom up and to the back of the dashboard cavity to move it out of the way, and put the Densin box into the HU cavity:
9. Push or cut out the small rectangular panel inside the glovebox and feed the HU end of the ipod connector through the hole:
http://i805.photobucket.com/albums/yy333/leon-munkee/12082008321.jpg
It should come out inside the dashboard HU cavity and can be pulled through:
http://i805.photobucket.com/albums/yy333/leon-munkee/Fitting3.jpg
10. Finally, connect up the Dension box to the ipod cable, and push it down into the left-hand side of the dasboard HU cavity
http://i805.photobucket.com/albums/yy333/leon-munkee/Fitting2.jpg
11. Slide the HU back into place carefully, after ensuring that it does not catch on the wiring as it slides back in.
12. Connect your ipod into the cradle or cable in the glovebox *before* turning on the HU.
13. Turn on the HU, select the CD/AUX input (the AUX input if you had it will now be disabled). The HU should show 'CDC' and should begin playing your ipod after a short pause.
Any questions...?

If you have the Bluetooth option, and hence the large MFD...
Go into the menu and check you have a new menu item showing your iPod:
http://i805.photobucket.com/albums/yy333/leon-munkee/Screen1.jpg
Select this to show the track information.
http://i805.photobucket.com/albums/yy333/leon-munkee/Screen3.jpg
You can press OK to go back to an ipod-style menu allowing selection of Artists, Playlists, Albums, Genre's etc.
The steering wheel controls, if present, will continue to function as normal, as will the bluetooth phone interaction (the ipod will get paused, like a normal CD does when using the phone).
Any pics of the cradle in the gloveobx?

Got my unit today and I think its the wrong one

Leon Munkee's pictures look more like this unit:
http://enfigcarstereo.com/shopsite_sc/store/html/DENSION_GW15VC1.html
The part number on the box was correct GW15VC1 but the part number on the back of the dension module was HW V5R5-21.
Suffice to say it dosn't work, well there is sound (very poor quality) the steering wheel buttons don't work and there is no track info on the Multi function screen.

Yep, mine is the GW15VC1. I also has that number on the back of the Dension module as well. Also, I didn't have the extra connector behind my stereo that you have (the little blue one). I think that is built into the main quadlock connector block on mine.
Where did you get your Dension box from, and did they actually state it was the GW15VC1 and not the GW15VW1?
This is what I bought: http://www.chameleondirect.com/gw15vc1-gateway-100

Johnny
It just displays a track number and the elapsed time counter. AFAIK the head unit cannot handle text information coming in on the changer port.

No, as I've had problems with my cradle. I'm swapping it for the dock cable instead. Will post some pics of that as soon as I've swapped them over.
I realised I ordered the wrong part  I ordered GW15V1 not GW15VC1 that C makes all the difference. I have swapped them out now and all works perfect as Leon pics. :)

Ah, that'll be it then. I believe the 'C' denote the CAN-BUS version, giving the cluster-display functionality.
Any idea if there is a similar model that will handle usb windows media devices like the Creative Zen?

very interested in this device, can i ask are there any let downs with this e.g. with USB only limited to 6 folders etc. are there any limits with the amout of storage e.g. 16/32gb ipods etc. also does the ipod charge and play at the same time so you can perminently leave it in the car or does it charge with the key out aswell? meaning it would drain the battery if left in,
also does the cable / cradle come with this or do you have to pay more, do you get both or do you only get one?

The part number referenced here dosn't. Not sure if they do one that does.

This device cannot have a USB connected to it either Ipod or 3.5mm audio input. I have the 160GB ipod so there is no limit to storage attached. The unit charges while driving but not when the key is removed.

One thing I have noticed that is a little irratating with this is if I leave the MFD screen on the 'CDC' option (so the iPod track names are being displayed) and then disconnect the iPod from the car the MFD can sometimes become locked until the head unit is turned off or the iPod is reconnected. Not a huge issue, I'd recommend turning off the head unit *before* disconnecting the iPod to avoid the lock-up.
when you insert the strips as far as they can go, does the head unit pop out slightly or is it a best guess?
(sorted)
A trip to halfords for removal keys and some huffing a puffing got the head unit removed to find a "bent part" on the top right clip.
1 installed Gateway 100. On comparing an ipod song to an mp3 song it seems the ipod songs are producing a stronger and louder bass with practically no distortion........

Hi, First post, so be nice :)
I had the GW16VW1 Dension kit fitted prior to taking delivery of the car. I have Bluetooth so I thought I would see the track info on the display, but only get the track number. Has this been incorrectly fitted? Or am I missing something?
Thanks in advance for your help.

Welcome to the forums.
It'll have been fitted correctly, it's just that the VW1 model only gives basic functionality. The GW15VC1 is the CAN-BUS version which provides a connection to the MFD in the instrument cluster to display track infomation and provide the iPod menu. AFAIK, Seat only fit the VW1 version.

Apologies if I have missed this but if I dont have bluetooth then I am I right in thinking I will not get any display with regards to tracks?

Hi
I've just been looking at your old post about installing the Denison Gateway 100. (Very detailed by the way!)
I've also read that some people have bought this & can't connect to their MFD. (Think they have the non-Cam Bus version).
I made some enquiries today about buying this unit & they said that the CAN-BUS version is not available yet for the MK2 Leon! I asked for a part Ref number but said that there will only be one available for this particular car so part numbers of no use!
Can you shed any light on this? I have standard Mk 2 Leon 2.0 Tdi Sport with Bluetooth.
Any info will help as really want to get this fitted soon.
Thanks

I've only just bought this unit but it is now called GW16VC1 (rather than GW15VC1) from Car Vision UK and it works perfectly.
By using this guide I managed to fit it in about 1 hr and I'm a complete knuckle head when it comes to this sort of thing.
Hi.Use google translator because I am Español.Sorry if I do not understand
I bought a Dension Gateway 100 and GW16vc1 version can not display text on my MFD.
I do not understand how it works GW15vc1 the text and the new version does not.
I contacted Dension moment but they have not been able to solve.
Everything works minus the text, ie you can select artists and albums, but blind.
Anybody can help me?
PS: My car is an FR TDI 2006 with the radio serial and usb mp3 com under asiento.Gracias

Ok just to throw the cat amongst the pigeons. i have done a search for the above mentioned Denison gateway 100 and im getting the following product code GW16AU2/VW1 for £139.97 from http://www.ipodcarkitdirect.co.uk/iPod_Car_Kit/For_Factory_Fitted_Radios/Seat_iPod_Car_Kit/Dension_Seat_Gateway_100_iPod_Car_Kit/Seat_ice%3ELink_Gateway_100

I know what you mean!
I actually emailed Denison direct via their web site as I wasn't sure which one would work properly. They even asked me to email photos of the head unit/MFD display to check.
They said I need GW16VC1 (Gateway 100) or GW33VC1 (gateway 300).
I've also seen the one listed on that web site but not sure what that is. I'm having mine fitted on Friday so will let you know how it goes.
I'm local to you as live in Knebworth & having it fitted by LM Audio in Knebworth.
Fingers crossed will have good review early next week! :)

As far as I'm aware, that one is not the CAN-BUS version and so will only interface with the head unit and not with the MFD, meaning no text display. You'll need the 'VC' rather than the 'VW' part to get the MFD integration.

I’ve had a shop around for those that may be interested in this product.
http://car-vision.co.uk/product_info.php?cPath=276&products_id=5343&osCsid=syhdbyyorh
Personally I wouldn’t advise buying from eBay, as im not sure if the internal config is generic or car specific.
£135 inc vat + postage
I suppose I should do that disclaimer bit, I don’t work for car-vision. Neither do I accept any responsibility if the above product is incompatible with your car

Does that include the link cable/cradle that you need to hook it up, or is it just the Gateway 100 box itself?

bang on another £25 for the cable and £26 for the cradle.
i looked for a cheaper cable from other sites but this seems to be the ceapest plus your only paying one delivery charge.

LM Audio in Knebworth.
I wanted to use them so that I got the right unit fitted. At least if they get wrong one can send back with no charge to me.
Also, I wanted the ipod dock to go into the central armrest & didn't fancy messing around with the plastics of the central console.
I could do with saving the cash but don't have any time to try & do it properly & would probably f*@k it up big time!!

I'm glad the guide is able to help some people, but I'll happily admit it can be a little tricky to remove the HU without causing any damage to the HU surround or fascia, but it can be done if you're careful and have a little patience.
If you're not sure of getting the right unit though, your approach may be the better one.

If I had the time would actually prefer to do it myself but don't seem to have 5 mins these days! Think I could follow your guide but don't want to rush & damage something that I also can't afford to replace.
Getting married this year so my financial situation only going to get worse in short term!!

Hi
How did you get on fitting the Denison?
I had mine booked in for fitting but when unit turned up had wrong connections! They've had to order another one & should be here by end of this week.
Can you let me know how you got on with yours & what part number you used?

Funny enough I was at local Seat (Letchworth) last week & saw the same thing! That is the Ice Link rather than the Gateway & apparently not as good. Also it won't show anything on the MFD as I have the Bluetooth screen.
I haven't actually checked mine but thought there was port for external CD changer? Also, my standard Head Unit is a Blaupunkt.
When mine is installed & working, hopefully by the weekend, will post & let you know what happened.

shadders, i think our cars are carbon copy's, lol.
There is some kind of connection port at the rear of the HU, more then likely for the CD changer.
make sure when you take the HU out that the gear stick isnt in 'P' or 'N' i scuffed mine a little. try to put it in 'S' however doing this you wont be able to take the keys out of the ignition!

If there is a port for the CD changer, this is where you connect the gateway as it replaces the CD changer.
Once it's done I'll let you know all the details & how well it works. Just hope they can get the part they need!

The CD button switches between the single CD and the "AUX" input that masquerades as a multiplay CDC.

Hi - Firstly I am new to this forum so apologies if missed something. I am trying to get a iPod connector kit for my Leon 07. Noticed you guys are in the same area. I called up Letchworth Auto Centre and they said that Seat had stopped producing the kit for the 07 Leon due to problems. What would be the best kit to get and how did you get on at L M Audio - was going to go there on Friday

Had the car about 18 months but just getting fed up using the aux lead - having to take it out every time I get out of car.
Will wait to hear what you think of the work the guys do in Knebworth

Shadders, did you manage to get it installed in the end?
I also have an original Seat Leon Sport '06 (without the aux socket) and was wondering if this would be compatible. I have the Bluetooth built in so want the menu navigation to.
Was hoping MK Seat might be able to do it during its service next week but from reading the thread seems Seat don't offer the MFD capable one?

Sorry no joy!
LM Audio couldn't source the correct part from the normal supplier. They then tried someone else & nothing arrived!
The part is out there as emailed Dension direct & confirmed new release only happened in Jan this year. Think part number was GW16VC1 which is the Can-Bus version & should then work with dashboard MFD.
You can buy on line from Ipod Car Kit Direct or Car Vision. LM said if I wanted to buy myself & bring to them, they would install for £70. Bit steep as unit would cost about £160 & then fitting on top.
I've got this on hold at present as just had to get 2 new tyres @ £230, tax, MOT & insurance all due end of month along with final payment on finance! Gonna be a lot of outgoings & plus I'm getting married in September. Will be skint for years!
Sorry can't give you any more help. I did research quite a lot in first place & am sure you can source it.
Another option for you, LM Audio orignally got a Connects 2 unit in for me which apparently does exactly the same & may still have in stock. Worth a go but check price as Connects 2 much cheaper that Dension.
All the best.
Well Seat MK fitted mine for me, seems the correct part, and have got sound out of it however it seems the iPhone 3G won't charge from it and no menu access from the dashboard (apparently an Apple 'feature').
On the look out now for an old iPod classic to use with it instead...
I went out today and bought a full iPod... and still no track/menu on the MFD :censored:
The Dension unit is the GW16xxx as it does charge my iPhone 3G and I can use the controls to change tracks.
Just don't know what the issue is, could be that the original '06 MFD doesn't work with it, or that the original '06 stereo doesn't support it, or that the Dension unit installed is the VW not the VC unit.
Right now it's just a 3000 track CD, how do they expect you to navigate or use it?!
I'm in the same situation as you.
My car is a 2006 fr version 100 and Dension cam-bus does not show titles inthe MFD.
Dension do not know no answer. Any solution?

Oh that's not good
Have you got the iPod in Gateway UI mode - http://www.dension.com/index.php?pageID=13&articleID=56 also have you tried setting the text display - http://www.dension.com/index.php?pageID=13&articleID=53
I assume you have a iPod Classic/Nano? The iPhone and iPod touch don't parse menus or id3 tags so they can't show on the MFD anyway.
I do have my suspicions that it's the MFD, I remember the mid year '06 revision added several functions to the MFD setup screen so there must have been a version upgrade perhaps the original isn't compatible.
I tried to tell the two solutions with the same text resultado. No supports tex in MFD.
I have an ipod classic 30 gigabytes, and I can select the radio artists, albums etc. through the radio .. but without any text in MFD.
Thanks a lot for this guide LeonMunkee... I've followed this one this weekend and I must say that I am one very happy camper :D
My iPhone 3G works perfectly with my GW16VW1 (except for the well known lack of ID3 tags on the display)... It's almost fun now to be stuck in traffic ;-)
I have also now fitted the GW16VW1 and can confirm that it works fine. The only slight issue I have is sometimes when connecting the iphone 3G up the unit does not resume what was previously being played but just displays 'track 99' and plays nothing! I have tried both connecting before and after the head unit is switched on. Think its something to do with the CD6 input mode setting switching itself, because if I go to CD6 and re-input either mode (track) 2 or 3 it sorts itself out! Was going to see what version of firmware is on the dension, but this information is not displayed on the iphones screen, unlike an ipod

I see this issue on mine (Dension Gateway 100/GW15VC1 with iPod nano), and it's usually when the head unit has been switched to CDC with no iPod connected. CD6/Track3 will get me out of it, or using the MFD menu.
The iPhone and iPod touch don't parse menus or id3 tags so they can't show on the MFD anyway. My girlfriend's iPhone 3G has been connected and shows ID3 tags on the MFD ok, so maybe it's just then GW16VC1 that doesn't parse properly?
My iPhone 3G works perfectly with my GW16VW1 (except for the well known lack of ID3 tags on the display)I suspect that'll be because the GWxxVW1 part isn't CAN-BUS compatible so won't send the ID3 info to the MFD. The GWxxVC1 part is needed for that.

True, i think so as well... but seeing as I don't think I have an MFD (I believe I have the RNS 300) it's not that big of a deal for me...
The store I ordered the cable from first sent me the GW15VW1, which isn't compatible with the 3G. You would expect a specialised store to know that :(
Anyhow, I was pretty darn happy when I finaly heared music from my iPhone playing over the car speakers :D

Probably worth me clarifying a few things here, as there seems to be some confusion:
'MFD' refers to the large display in the instrument cluster (where your MPG, odometer, trip counter etc.. is displayed), and not to the head unit. The MFD is fitted if the car has the bluetooth option. VW refer to this same display as 'Hi-Line'.
'MFD2' and 'MFD3' are what people refer to the the Sat Nav head units (HU) fitted in the Leon as. (People shortening this to 'MFD' just causes confusion.)
'RCDxxx' are Blaupunk or Grundig Radio CD (RCD) head units used in other VW group cars but not fitted as standard to the Leon. They have similar functionality I believe to ours, but look different. (Do a google image search for RCD 300 to see...).
'RNSxxx' are similar, but are SatNav head units.
The Dension Gateway boxes all connect to the standard Leon head unit via the 'CDC' CD Changer interface and 'pretend' to be CD changers so the head unit can control track selection and receive the audio.
The CAN-BUS versions of the Dension also have a connection the the MFD wiring to send data to the instrument cluster display.
There is no connection between the standard Leon CD head unit and the large instrument cluster MFD, so no ID3 tags from MP3 CDs are viewable.
If you fit the GWxxVC1 Dension Gateway, then ID3 tags from the iPod/iPhone will be viewable on the large instrument cluster MFD (where fitted).
No ID3 tags from iPods are viewable on the CD head unit display, no matter which Dension Gateway is purchased, as the Leon standard HU doesn't support text-in on the CD changer interface.
I believe the standard Leon CD head unit is either the SE359 (http://www.mapleaudio.co.uk/picpage.htm?pics/SEATSE359.jpg) or SE360 (http://www.mapleaudio.co.uk/picpage.htm?pics/SEATSE360.jpg) (MP3 version).
I think facelifted Leon's use the SE250 head unit.
Thanks a lot for clarifying this! Especially the bit with MFD/MFDxxx/RNSxxx apparently had me confused...

This isn't possible with the Dension can bus unit, or least it wasn't with the dension unit I had in mine.

Thanks for that post Leon.
So to clarify, I have a non bluetooth MK2, so if I install one of these kits, the only way I can view track names is on the ipod itself? How about skipping tracks and albums? As my standard Leon stereo isnt an mp3 one either... wish I checked when I bought it.

The only way you'll be able to view track information is on the ipod itself, and only when the Dension gateway is in 'ipod UI' mode. When it is in 'ipod GW' mode the ipod screen will just display a logo and a version number.
In either mode you'll be able to skip to the next track or previous one (as you would on a normal CD) using '<<' and '>>' on the steering wheel or head unit.
You should also be able to select the first 5 playlists on your ipod using the preset number buttons 1-5 on the head unit if you make 5 playlists on the ipod numbered '1', '2' etc and put the stuff you want to listen to in them.
You can select 'all tracks' on the ipod using preset button 6. (So doing that and turning on random will do shuffle play from the anything on the ipod)
The head unit not being the MP3 version won't affect the control of the ipod as far as I know.
Hi to all (Mr LeonMunkee in particular)...
Just wanted to say thanks for the information re Leon Dension kits - fitted mine today, it's great!!
A couple of things to add to the points discussed..
My SEAT dealer could not get the required version (with a C in the part no.) - this turns out to be because it's a Volkswagen unit that just happens to work on the Leons with bigger MFD screen (bluetooth models).
The model number appears to be different now - its now GW16VC1 (6 instead of 5).
Took me longer than it should as I had never been in the sub-menues of my MFD - my bad!!
Anyway, thanks again for the invaluable guidance - PICS are brilliant!!)

I've just discovered on Dension's website the Car Compatibility PDF:
http://www.dension.com/download.php?file=20091202webcompatibility.pdf
This has recently been updated and gives more information that the standard table (http://www.dension.com/compatibilityDatabase.php?carMaker=Seat&huMaker=) does.
Does anyone know what head unit model the new facelifted Leon Mk2's have in them, as I've had a couple of PMs asking how to get them working with the Dension boxes...?
**UPDATE**
New compatibility table on Dension's website: http://www.dension.com/download.php?file=seat-16-02-10.pdf
Looks like facelifted Leon's may use the SE250 head unit
sorry if this sounds like a stupid question
is it possible to connect one of these to a mfd3 HU

So long as the MFD3 supports the standard VAG CD changer interface then it should work fine.
If you've got the Bluetooth option on your car (and therefore the large multi-function display in the instrument cluster), make sure you get the CAN bus version to display the track names. As mentioned in earlier posts, that'll be the version that has 'C' in the model number.
Just a quick post to say thankkkkkkkkkkkkks for the guide.
Took me less than 10 mins to fit :D

Hi Guys
I've been lurking for a while, but this is my first post, so please be gentle :-)
Just picked up my 55 plate MK2 2.0 TDI DSG Leon - VERY happy with it so far - much more nimble than the tank (AKA Mondeo) I used to have :-)
My first little project is to add an iPod adapter - I have the basic (i.e. non-MP3) radio/CD HU fitted. There is no blue-tooth option fitted, so I just have the regular digital display on the instrument panel.
After reading through the thread I am still a little confused and wonder if any of you could just clarify:
will my HU be able to display any information other than track number and time elapsed?
does the Dension come with the iPod connection cable or is that seperate?
which Dension is the best one to get for my HU?
what is the current part number for the right Dension?
Thanks in advance :-)

I went ahead and ordered a Gateway 100 and it's all fitted ok, and I can hear music from the iPod no problem, however I'm having some problems browsing and selecting tracks via both the HU and steering wheel controls...
My understanding was that if I created playlists numbered 1,2,3 etc on the iPod, these would correspond with with the appropriate CD selection, but this doesn't seem to work - if I select a CD number, the HU says 'loading CD', but then just carries on playing the track that was already on. None of the CD selection buttons seem to have any effect.
In addition, at the moment the iPod is in GW mode, so I just get the Dension logo on screen. I can't change it to iPod mode using the instructions on Dension's website.
Any suggestions would be appreciated :-)

I'd be interested to hear about this too.
I have 06 2.0 TDI with standard MP3 HU & Bluetooth with larger MFD. Nearly got something fitted last year but funds had to go elsewhere!
Willyeckaslike, can I ask where you bought your Dension & how much it cost?
Also, any idea of part code required?
Cheers

Well mine's a (December '05) 55 plate MK2 2.0 TDI Sport with a NON-mp3 HU, and without bluetooth, so just the standard instrument panel.
I ordered the Dension from ipodcarkitdirect.co.uk for £127.97, which included the cable, so I think the price is ok.
The order ref states "1 x Seat ice>Link Gateway 100 (GW16AU2/VW1)", but I'd have to remove it from behind the HU again to double check if there's a model number printed on the unit itself.
The order details do also state "Vehicle and Radio: Seat with RCD 300, RCD 500 & RNS4 Radios" - I think mine is the RCD 300?
I'm happy that I've ordered the right one - though I suppose that still leaves the possibility that they sent the wrong one...

Thanks for checking.
Not sure what my HU is. When someone had a look last year mentioned something about quadlock fitting(?) but I know nothing about them.
Hope you get it sorted & will hopefully have one myself in (near) future.

I think quadlock refers to the connector on the back of the HU. The Dension comes with a cable for that - it fitted my HU just fine.
I have a 58 plate leon with standard mp3 HU and bluetooth option. I have a gateway 100, was just wondering is there anyway to fit this so the aux port will still work??

Note that the 'VW1' part will not be CAN-BUS compatible, so although fine for you it won't provide the integration with the large MFD (instrument cluster display) on cars with the bluetooth option - you'll need a 'VCx' part for that.
The order details do also state "Vehicle and Radio: Seat with RCD 300, RCD 500 & RNS4 Radios" - I think mine is the RCD 300?
The RCD head units are VW ones - the Seat ones fitted to the Mk2 pre-facelift Leons are different.
Take a look at post #59 (http://www.seatcupra.net/forums/showpost.php?p=2516096&postcount=59) of the thread for info on (amongst other things) head unit numbers.
I think quadlock refers to the connector on the back of the HU
It does indeed. Quadlock is the name for the multi-connection square connector used on many VAG head units.

If you can identify which pins are used to connect the audio from the Aux-In port to the head unit, and separate them out, you should be able to wire a standard 3.5mm jack plug on the end and connect it to the jack socket on the Dension. Just don't try and use both the iPod and Aux-In at the same time :)
thanks mate^^^^, will look into it.

Your bit showing how to fit the Dension gateway was a great help.I just fitted the Gateway 100 GW16VC1 which was so easy to fit apart from removing the head unit, could not get it out so went to my local Seat dealer.Gave one of the lads a couple of quid and he removed it in seconds went home fitted the Dension and it works great with all the full display of the artists etc on the mfd
Certainly well worth the money
many thanks

I'd also be interested in this as looking to have GW16VC1 fitted soon.
Looking at maybe getting iPhone instead off using dedicated iPod for car.
If iPhone connected to iPod docking cable for music playback, can I still use the phone to make/receive calls which would be connected to factory fit Bluetooth?
Also interested to hear if anyone using Dension with iPhone 4.

Hi all,
total noob to the forum here so sorry if I put my foot in it....
I have the original HU from 2007 without mp3 function, and small mfd below temp gauge. Can I retrofit mp3 functionality without this ipod connector? and without buying a new HU? (Iactually only own an ipod shuffle...no good I reckon.) If so, how, and for how much? I see some here mention a usb connection, can I go that route? Or even just to be able to play a data cd..

Hi
I think you only really have 2 choices:
a.) Swap out your headunit for MP3 unit so you can play CD's with MP3 files on or
b.) Buy iPod integration (Dension etc) so you can plug in your iPod. This will plug into back of your current head unit into the aux/cd changer port.
I'm unsure if you can def use option b.) with your current head unti but should be OK & this would be best option. Check out ipodcardkitdirect & should be about £100.
Cheers
Thanks Shadders,
However, if I'm going to spend a ton on the integration kit, and another ton on an alternative ipod, then I'm nearly half way there to an MFD2/3. Think I might start saving up altogether...

The iPhone 4 works ok with the Dension GW100 that I've got, although as I've got the earlier revision of the unit (GW15VC1) it doesn't charge whilst playing. I've got no reason to suspect the current GW16VC1 will not behave the same functionally but add in the charging. Hopefully someone who has one will confirm though...

Guys I need help!
Car booked in this morning to have Gateway 100 GW16VC1 fitted & they can't get it working.
Installer said has correct plugs & is charging iPod but the headunit won't recognise it & play any music.
Has anyone else had this problem & are we missing something?
He's taken some photos & will speak to Dension on Monday as may just be dodgy unit.
I want to get this sorted ASAP as want to get it fitted next Sat latest as following weekend I've got 5 hour drive to Cornwall!!
Any help appreciated. Thanks

Given I've PM'd Shadders with this info I may as well put it here in case it helps others too....
------
The Dension unit has 3 different 'modes':
'AUX GW'
When it's in 'AUX GW' mode (shown in the MFD menu), the head unit will display 'Track 99', and you won't be able to control or hear the ipod. (Not really sure what this mode is for...)
'iPod UI'
When it's in 'iPod UI' mode, you should be able to use the controls on the ipod itself to select tracks etc, and hear the music via the head unit.
'iPod GW'
When it's in 'iPod GW' mode, you won't be able control the iPod from its controls, only via the car. The head unit should show a track number and time counter (as if you were playing a CD) and the next/previous track buttons on the head unit (and steering wheel) should skip tracks. Music should be heard.
Normally, you'd control playlist/album/artist selection via the switch on the end of the indicator stalk and the MFD in the instrument cluster. If you select your the Dension unit from the menu, then select 'Source' you'll get a choice of the 3 modes. Really, 'iPod GW' is the only one you'll be wanting to use.
If however, the unit gets stuck in another mode, and you can't access the MFD menus to change it, you can use the buttons on the front of the head unit to change modes:
- Select 'CD/AUX' on the unit. It should end up showing 'Track 99'
- Press '6' (using the radio present/disc selection buttons to the left of the display). The display should then show 'cd6 load', then show 'Track 1'
- Use the right arrow (above the volume knob) twice to select 'Track 3'
- Now, press and hold the right arrow for a few seconds, then release. The display should show 'cd5 load', followed by a track number. This should have changed the mode to either 'iPod UI' or 'iPod GW'. You'll be able to tell which by looking at the ipod's display - it'll either show a Dension logo (when in 'iPod GW' mode) or the normal iPod screen (when in 'iPod UI' mode).
It is worth noting that at all times when the head unit is on, the CD Changer icon on the head unit display should be shown at the bottom. It looks like two or three overlapping circles, and will be next to a similar-looking icon which shows whether the radio station you're tuned to is in stereo or not. If this icon is not being displayed, then the 'CD Changer' - which is the Dension unit - has not been recognised.
A note for the installer - it might not work if the Dension Gatway unit gets connected to the head unit / wiring loom whilst the ignition is turned on (or in accessory position), so worth removing the keys first. Also, make sure the head unit is turned off using the button on the front first (rather than just turning off the car and letting it switch itself off) before it is removed for the installation.

Anyone? It seems strange that it does not charge..
Apple changed the pin on the dock connector that is used for charging at some point several years ago. The upshot is that some non-genuine accessories won't charge older iPods.
My Dension Gateway has the reverse issue as it's older - it won't charge my iPod nano, but used to charge my old iPod mini.
I think you may be able to get an adaptor to go between the dock and your ipod to 'move' the charging pin..
I have just changed from a Ibiza 1.6 Sport to an Ibiza FR and i have installed my dension gateway 100 in to my new car. It olny seems to work thought the AUX port on the dateway and not though the IPOD cable ( it still charges and displays Acc connected ) but the stereo just displays AUX on the screen.
Any Help would be amazing as im lost with out my music.
Thanks

How do you get on finding your way around? I still think interface is a bit clunky.

did you renew any firmware on the dension??? because is saw something on the dension site but no idea if it might work.
