Sound quality from stereo jack to AUX in?

I have just purchased a car with an old alpine dvd flip-out headunit and was hoping to get a plug in box to link my ipod to it (which allows control of the ipod through the headunit). Unfortunately as the headunit is too old, Alpine do not make a compatable ipod adaptor. I can connect my ipod from the headphone stereo jack to one of the AUX inputs on the stereo which works ok. Does anyone know how the sound quality i can achieve in this way compares to that when using the dedicated connection unit?

Or are there any other connection options that would allow me to achieve better quality sound?

well i used to plug my phone into my headunit and i realised that it was using the amplifier in the phone rather than the unit
so it will only be as loud as your i pod can power it i imagine
