I have read various posts stating that some people let the Turbo cool down after driving the car hard, how do I go about this do I just leave the car running for a few minutes and how hard is hard if you pardon the pun

its called "turbo timiing" basically you just have to let the engine sit at the idle for 1-2 minutes after heavy driving.

As for what exactly heavy driving is - well a hard run along some twisitiies where you accelerated alot would count, as would a motorway trip of above about 15-20 mins.

Basically if in doubt turbo time it, its never going to hurt to do it.

Idle it for a couple of minutes or just take it nice and easy for the last couple of miles of your journey.

Good practice for turbo'd cars and N/A cars alike.

I take it easy for the last 5 mins of my journey. Also, i've started turning the boost all the way down too as this will reduce temps somewhat (i'm guessing) [i have a real time boost controller fitted].

AFIK it isn't so-much temperature related as 'spin' related.

You don't want to shut the engine off while the turbo is still spinning. The turbo impeller floats on bearing of pressurised engine oil. If you remove the oil pressure the bearing surfaces will make contact and get damaged.

Turbos spin v.fast so can still be turning for a few minutes after you last 'booted-it'. :D

Turbo's are always spinning while the engine is running, they just spin faster when you 'boot' it.

It is temperature related - a turbo will glow red hot when you're going for it. If you shut the engine down while the turbo is still red hot, the oil inside will/may turn to soot etc. causing the oilways to block.

..plus higher boost = higher induction temps (and hence why i need better intercooling!)

And higher boost (aka chipping/remap) means more rpm on the turbine.
I think it's for every xtra 0.1bar it's something like +15000rpm on the turbo.
