My dad got a new car the other day, and rang up to change the insurance over. He knew how much I wanted to have a go in it so he tried to add me to the insurance, but for some reason couldnt. His old car was an M-sport 530i BMW, ~230bhp, insurance group 17. His new car is a 730d BMW, ~230 bhp, insurance group 17.

They wouldnt add me to the policy? I've been insured on his 5 series numerous times, he hasnt changed insurance co or any other details except the car. They still had my details on file from when I was insured before.

The bloke on the phone said, 'oh I know why, it must be the insurance group, its changed'. Uh oh, no it hasn't. 'oh it must be the power of the car then, it must have changed', uh oh, no it hasnt. Literally, nothign has changed on the car, even the values when he bought them both were pretty similar.

Apparently in the end the bloke came back and said the 5 series was insurance group 17e, and the 7 series is a 17g. I didnt know they split the insurance groups down like that. Now I have to wait until I'm 21 to get to drive it apparently. Is this for real or are we just being fobbed off?

Thanks, sorry for the long post!

I heard different. Rang my insurer up the other day and it's goin from 1-20 to 1-40.

I got several quotes on SEATs, and to give an idea, a LC is group 36 (IIRC), Mk4 Ibiza TDI FR is 20.

From what i gathered with talking to the lass, a lot of them have just doubled the number

what insurance group? This doesnt sounds like its gonna make things difficult for young drivers as they try to sort themselves out!

I knew there were 2 scales - I think most co's use 1-20 but some use 1-40, but I've never heard of using a number before.
