My car was parked by the side of the road ticking over lovely while I was waiting for my mate to get out of his (we were all going out in mine), when all of a sudden the revs dropped off and it was struggling to tick over. I turned it off and now it wont start. When you try to start it the engine turns over nicely but wont fire up and the oil light flashes. It's only recently been serviced so any ideas before I give in to the garage???

Many thanks

Carlp............

Check that an HT lead that runs from the dizzy to the 'coil' isn't loose

that's a favourite for me.

Right, not meaning to sound condescending, but if the oil light flashed and it cut out, have you checked the oil?

As m0rk says, prolly something dizzy/ht based, but also check the ignition coil (square block under the wiper tray with a cable coming of it top right of engine bay)

If you're garage is sorting it for you i wouldnt worry, otherwise by yoursaelf a haynes and go through the trouble shooting process, checking you've got enough battery voltage, checking for a spark on eahc cylinder and checking you have fuel flow too.

Yes mate there is oil in there! thought about that. I could check it when I get home but the car is on a very slight slope but dunno if it will make much difference. You can hear fuel pump start up and the engine does turn over jst not fire. Was gonna see if I could attack it myself before garage and hopefully save cash but knowing my luck it would be an ECU f**k up or something!! Was gonna buy a haynes manual the other day too!

Cheers guys will keep you posted but until then, KEEP ON WALKIN!!!!

I looked at the car saturday afternoon with a mate (even though he's a vauxhall lover!) and as we suspected the ignition coil had given up! I phoned the local Motorists discount centre and they said it's £32.70. Excellent so they ordered it in and I picked it up yesterday (9/6/03) afternoon. But it was the wrong one! They only had one listed but it was no good! So a quick phone call to Seat to find they had one on the shelf..... for about £80 odd!!!! Got down there to get it and of course he didn't quote VAT!!! £102.21 got my car fixed and I fitted it in about five mins!!!!!!

The same thing has happened to my car. I have left it an garage for 2 weeks and the mechanic has yet to work out what the problem is:cry: .
Would really appreciate some advise, if the same thing has happened to your car or you know alot about Seat what was the problem?
Really worried it'g going to be an ECU prob and cost me a fortune.
I drive Seat Ibiza 1.9 diesel 1998.
Thanks
