View Full Version : Best way to de-glaze pads?
Not that I've glazed my pads ~ just always wondered what the best de-glazing method is :)

Off the car, coarse emery paper 240 grit or 180 grit on flat surface and rub the surface glaze off.
If pads have got hot enough to glaze it is quite likely that the "binder" used during the pad manufacture would have broken down leaving the more aggressive media.
Pagid told me that when this happens, the binder actually works as lubricant (sounds stupid but it is'nt) which allows the disks slide over the pad in an even rate. when this binder has been overheated the disk wear can be greatly accelerated.
If the pads are glazed, you might also want to abrade the disk surface to take the shine off it also......
Grooved disks help deglaze pads during normal operation albeit at the expence of some extra pad wear (especially something like the Tarox G88 cheese grater disks)

Thanks Bill (knew you'd answer....almost put "FAO Bill" in the title :p )
I've only ever had to deglaze pads once (off car with a file), but have heard folks claim to "de glaze" their pads on the road. Not sure what technique they are using :dunno:

Someone told me once that repeated short-sharp(hard) application of the brakes would do it. I assume to 'break' the glazed surface away without allowing the pad to heat-up too much in the process?

is the breaking differant when the pads have glazed (never been an issue for me I used to have a 1.2 clio)
