My mate Ben has an S3 with the optional bose sound system in it and wants to change the head unit.

He wants to slot in a Becker hu (or rather he wants me to do it!). The dealer has told him he'll need some 'special' adapter due to the bose system. Said it was because of the amp.

Is the 'special' adapter just pre-outs? I've got no problem changing head units, but want to know what I'm in for first, having no idea what the bose option contains.

Why isn't he happy with the Bose system? The Bose systems I've heard have sounded the puppy's privates:D

Anyhow, if you look at the Bose website www.bose.co.uk this has got some info. Basically it would appear as though the answer is no you can't change the HU, due to the integrated nature of the Bose systems.

This is in line with what I found out when I looked in to the possibility of retrofitting a Bose system a few years ago...

The f***ing nob bought his S3 in Germany on the cheap and got every single extra available except...... he got a cassete player :(
Didn't fancy the cd option as he really wants an md head ubit.

Cheers for the link Kev. Just read bose' statement on changing the hu, bollocks in my opinion- anything is possible. Even the Audi dealer said it could be done with the right adapter.

It can be done, it's just how that's the problem... I don't know much about Bose car kit but I'll have a scout around...

Right it can be done :D

According to the autoleads site... Parts...

FP-18-00 ( facia adapter )
PC9-408 ( harness adapter )
PC5-52 ( Aerial amplifier )

should do the job...

If the Bose unit will control an autochanger then he should be able to connect a MD changer using the appropriate Connects2 adaptor. That way he gets to play MD's but doesn't lose the convenience of a factory unit and the clean looking dash.
Personally I was very keen to keep the factory HU in previous cars so that I didn't have to muck around with removable face plates etc.
