i think its to help prevent anyone using your number in a stolen car similar to yours, x out a few of the last numbers and it should be fine.:)

Can the Engine type code be extracted from the VIN number as I seem to have a few problems identifying the engine type for my wife's Ibiza 1.4S (W plate). I'm only after straightforward items from (GSF or Euro Car Parts) such as air and oil filters to avoid paying the high (rip-off?) dealer prices (£140 for ignition leads!)

Thanks in advance

the tax book should have an engine number, generally its the first three letters, for example abf321122 would indicate that its an abf engine (2.0 16v which is shared with the mk3 golf 16v gti)

All SEAT Vin numbers start VSS ZZZ, the VSS identifies the car as a SEAT, the Z's are filler codes not used by SEAT.
The next two letters identfy the model (6K is Ibiza Mk 2 / 3 or equivalent Cordoba, 6L is Mk 4 Ibiza, 7M Alhambra, 1M Mk 1 Leon or Mk 2 Toledo etc etc). Next is another Z filler code.
The next character signifies the model year, 1-7 for 2001-2007 models. Previous to that they were letters going back from Y = 2000, X = 1999, W=1998 etc.
The next letter signifies the factory the car was built at. R=Martorell in Spain where most SEAT's are now built.
The final six numbers are the build number of your car for that model at that factory in that model year!

Here is my standard answer on build sheets, those stickers under the carpet in the boot which include the VIN code. The VIN code includes your chassis number, which could be used by unscrupulous cut-and-shut merchants to legitimise a rebuild - a form of identity theft.

The build sheet is under the carpet in the boot. It will look something like this; (taken from my build sheet, with serial numbers anonymised)

G123 24-5 697289 EG I don't know what this signifies.
VSS ZZZ 1M Z 2B123456 VIN code; Chassis number 2B123456
1M28 24 1M2824 is the complete model code
TOLEDO TDI 8 SIGNA Model designation for 1M2824 in MY02
81 MNO C5M 81 = engine power in KW
ASV EGS Engine code and Gearbox code
LS5N ---- ---- KU Paint No and interior code

After this you get a series of 3-character Option codes which indicate what options were installed at the factory.

The VIN code breaks down like this;

VSS ZZZ 1M Z 2B012345
||| ||| || | ||||||||
||| ||| || | ||++++++-Production sequence number (i.e. chassis number)
||| ||| || | |+-------Manufacturing plant (B Brussels, Belgium)
||| ||| || | +--------Model Year - 2 2002
||| ||| || +----------Check digit - Z, filler
||| ||| |+------------Engine
||| ||| +-------------Body Style
||| +++---------------Vehicle Attributes - ZZZ, filler
+++-------------------Origin: V Europe,VS Spain, VSS SEAT

Of course the build sheet only tells you the condition of the car when it was delivered.

I don't suppose anyone has any idea what the Variant and Version codes mean on the Registration document? Found under the Model/Type of car.
