View Full Version : Seat Leon 1.8 20VT + chip
Hi,
Can some one tell me, why my Leon 1.8T with chip, lose power over 5000 RPM? From ca. 3000 RPM the boost goes to 1,3 bar and by about 4500 RPM it fells down to 0,8 bar and because of that the car hasnt much power over 5000 RPM.
How much boost does your chiped Leons have over RPM range?
Have some body have a dyno graph of cars being chiped?
IF so, could you all post me your dyno charts to my e-mail, so I can compare the diference.
And, in 6 gear I dont come over 6000 RPM, so my top speed isnt over 235 km/h. It goes the some as without chip. How much is your top speed?
THANK YOU FOR YOUR HELP

As far as i know all turbo cars have their boost drop off at high revs as you lose power anyway. Theres nothing wrong with your car. I'm not sure why they have to do this but they do.
I know that it my ibiza it spikes at 17-18psi drops straight away to 15 psi and by 5500rpm in 5th it is at 8-9 psi. I think it is down to Turbo size in my car. On a leon not sure could be the same thing.
I think i peak at about 1.15bar, and drop off is post 6,000rpm (mostly). It all-depends on the work of your tuner (Jabbasport in my case) in getting the car to sustain the boost as long as possible..
Not sure if this helps, but I had a similar problem on my TT.
It seemed to be a very peaky power graph.
It turned out one of the hoses coming from the turbo had a split in it. It was replaced by Audi and all was well again.
I advise you to check all the hoses, this can be quite tricky to spot as the split might only be apparent when the hose is under pressure.
Good Luck,

The power you describe is normal..
Small turbos do not produce sustained high boost at high rpms.
circa 5K rpm boost reduces.

I think the reason this happens actually (just e theory mind) is that at really high revs the tubro gets spun really quick, however what this means is that the blades of the fan are just 'churning' up the air rather than forcing it into the induction manifold which reduces the pressure. The same kind of thing happens with boats, you spin a propller too fast and it just churns up the water. With a bigger turbo you've bot bigger blades which i believe still produce pressure at thiger revs cus they don't churn.
Not sure about this churning thing..
However, Bill etc is spot on.. Small turbo's just cant flow the air at high engine rpm's. And even if you do lawd knows what to them, to force them to crank out more boost, the air is so damn hot, and thus less dense the engine just isnt going to make big power at the top end with a small turbo.
K03's are great for mid range wallop though. Which is just where you need it. So no need to rev the big ends off your engine. Unlike the Honda boys :D
Thanks to you all for your help.
I see that I must go to K04, to make more power.

The K04 isn't radically larger (as i understand it the casing is the same size) and it's a lot of money for a small power gain. I'd look at a larger turbo altogether (Jabbasport's IHI pulls solidly all the way to the limiter by comparison). The K04 will have the same characteristic dropout (as bill says) circa 5k.
also got to do with actuator control and safety. can the car get enough fuel for boosting 1 bar 6000rpm to stop det etc etc

I would take my Leon to about 270 HP, the some as CUPRA R, and that makes a lot of difference to the standart K03 with chip and about 210 HP.
I already have a K04 023 at home, is the some model as it used in CUpra R, and I have payed 575 EUR for it. I become the turbo direcly from the 3K factory. I only need some other parst from Cupra R, and that it. The cost of the all kit would be about 2500 EUR. Thats not so much.

Fairy nuff if you've got the parts lying round best of luck :) You might need to uprate/change your intercooler too (remember the R has two intercoolers) as a chipped K04 produces a lot of boost and therefore heat.
I'm doing just that pre-IHI conversion (350bhp~) - plus brembos to cope with slowing it down!
(BTW i have a K03 and 240bhp :D )
@dangel
What mods have you done to have 240 HP?

Jabbasport chip (remap) and boost controller, forge DV007p. running optimax fuel too..
Can you tell me please which boost controler do you use, and where can I buy it?
How did you connect the boost controler?
THANKS

www.jabbasport.com They fitted it whilst chipping the car. It allows you to adjust the boost level in realtime (i.e. without running down the engine) but doesn't (in itself) increase power.
My car used to spike at 22psi with a superchip and exhaust. But now i have had the maf sensor changed it spikes at 18psi but holds 12 psi at 5500rpm in 4th now, before a 22psi spike resulted in 8psi at 5500rpm. Maybe the maf was screwing things up, who knows.
