View Full Version : Nokia Car Kit & Standard HU

Hi

I've a New Cupra R, and I've got my car kit installation booked for Tuesday. My company's a bit tight and they'll only pay for a "Mid Level" install, which basically means that the car kit can be wired to mute the radio, but not to pass-through the speakers, if you catch my drift.

Question - does anyone know the connections on the standard fitment HU to allow the pass-through? I'm hoping that if the installer has all the information, he won't be able to say no to doing it (He's got to get to the back of the head unit to connect up for the muting, so while he's there he might aswell do the rest of it - surely easier than having to fit the external speaker and then hide the wiring??)

Thanks in advance,

Phil

Phil,

Welcome to the forum BTW...

DOnt want to rain on your parade, but I was under the impression that the std HU didnt have the mute facility, and therefore the speakers couldnt be used. I may be wrong but that was my understanding, and the reason I have not had a car kit fitted to my cupra.

It may have changed now for the newer cars, so someone else may be able to advise you otherwise. PLease accept my apologies for panicing you if i am wrong.

Well, I hope that it at least mutes the radio. The car kit supplied is a Nokia "Advanced HF Car Kit" part no. CARK-91, don't know if that makes a difference.

I'll let you know after the install.

I suppose there's a nother question hidden in here - does anyone know who makes the HU for Seat? Might get the information out of them...

There is a mute lead on the standard HU. You could check the pin out over at ICE CAVERN. I've got a *.PDF copy of the older V3? service manual which I could send U.

Couldn't find anything relevant at ICE Cavern...

Can you post a direct link?

Ah, right thanks (you know, you'd think that because I work in IT, I'd be able to actually USE a computer...). Thanks also for the pdf.

To anyone else thinking about this, do it, it looks dead easy. I've a mate with an Octavia vRS (how sick is he about the Cupra R?) and that appears to be the same radio. It's certainly also by Grundig and I've checked the pin-outs off ICE-CAVERN with his and they're the same.

I won't repeat the pin-outs here, but to just to tell you how easy it is; there are three connections to make, one for the radio mute and two for the speaker connections. The Nokia CARK91 comes with two jack-plug connections, one for the mute, the other for the speaker connection.

Apparently the mute plugs straight in. For the speaker connection, you cut the lead between the speaker and the jack plug on the end strip the wires, and "my mate" didn't even bother to put spade connectors on the end, he just twisted the wires around the connectors (Skoda owners eh? I certainly wouldn't recommend doing that). I guess the only other question is which one is the ground wire out of the car kit (multi-meter or guessing by colour).

I would imagine the difficult bit is getting the radio out to get to the connectors at the back.

Still, I haven't actually had this done/done it myself yet - will post back when finished.

Sorry for the temporary rise in heart rate. As my information was obviously wrong...

Well, looks like you might have been right.

Vodafone guy fitted the kit yesterday, and wired it into the pins - but no joy. We fiddled for a bit and he also tried the VW/Audi configuration, but nothing. After talking to a couple of other people with other cars, they have specific settings in the radio to do with the car kit other than the radio mute volume (which is the only one I can find - I was hoping that the others might "wake up" when the hands free was connected...).

Mine is definitely a Aura V4, 'cos there's a sicker on the RHS of the HU saying so.

Vodafone guy said that he's done it before on a Leon Cupra, "oooh, about a year ago" so that might have been an Aura V3?

SEAT Customer Services have confimed that it can definitely be done "because I've got a mate that's got it on his" but as it's not a SEAT approved modification/standard she was unable/unwilling to tell me how to do it, other than "your dealer might be able to help".

Word of warning, I've plugged the external speaker into the hands free kit in the meantime, and the speaker volume is whisper quiet - Vodafone guy thinks that this is faultly kit, either because it was delivered that way OR by plugging it into the radio it's somehow damaged it.

Matey with Skoda has contact details for Grundig, which is how he got his pin-outs, so I'll try them next...

oh and, Vodafone guy took glove box assembly out to mount hands free kit. To do this he unplugged the air bag off switch - now the air bag warning light comes on with ignition, goes off, then comes back on and stays on...

Anyone know how to reset it?

This might well require a trip to a friendly dealer to ask them to reset it with a VAG-com...
I dont have the airbag off switch on my car & I dont know for certain that the dealer could do it this way but that Is what i'd do..

Hope you get it sorted anyway...

The man from Grundig, he says NO! Can't be done with an Aura Version 4.

Dealer says that the airbag light is an ECU reset/fault clear thing.

Hi,

I've just been through all this! (A bit painfully, too).

I fitted the Nokia kit first with the Aura head unit - you need the Autoleads VAG switch box, which diverts the 'phone output to the front speakers (it's basically a relay unit with ISO plugs at either end). The mute wire has to be connected separately to silence the unit anyway as the rear speakers aren't switched by the Autoleads box, and you need a bulb tester to identify this (a multi meter won't do this) by connecting the output wires in turn until the unit mutes (with the key in the ignition btw or it doesn't work at all). Anyway, the neat bit is that the Nokia unit gets power from the ISO loom, so no need to make a separate connection to the fuse box. The down side is that the unit mutes when you remove the ignition key.

Then I changed the head unit to a Alpine MP3 single slot (and removed the CD changer - the dealer had a spare cubby box that he gave me to fill in the empty hole). I also had the airbag light come on - hence the visit to the dealer - it seems that I had pulled a wire when I had the LH dash panels off (oops). It cost me £20 in labout time.

Finally, if you fit an aftermarket unit you need the Autoleads facia panel (much nicer than the Blaupunkt facia which the dealer will sell you) and the Autoleads signal separator to provide power for the aerial amplifier (as I found out after days of wondering why the radio reception was so poor).

Hope this helps - more details on request...
But I warn you - I'm not an expert (hence the pulled wire!)
:)
