the factory fitted immobiliser arent (as far as i am aware on these cars) Cat rated, this generally means that the insurance wont give you any discount. I could be wrong about this but mine isnt cat rated.......

tony, the immobiliser chip is in the key, it disarms the system when put into the ignition, it is a decent system for a manufacturer model, but get something elsse installed too for piece of mind. will set you back by a couple hundred usually, toad or clifford are decent makes to get. I ave a toad one..

There is indead a transponder in the key. If you pull the key apart you can see a small rectangular grey "chip" that's the transponder. It's not thatcham approved so it means jack to insurance companies. For £100 to £150 you could have a clifford virtual key or Toad or in fact many other makes of immobiliser. One word of advice though. Go for the transponder type and not the touch keys as they are a pain in the arse...

The chip in the key just holds a code, that is read by the ECU when you switch the ignition on. There is no thatcham rating with the immobiliser, so if you need one for your insurance you would need to get an aftermarket one fitted.
