View Full Version : camber gauge?
just bought a camber gauge but theres no instructions of how to use the bugger its got two spirit levels at 90 degree's to each other ,both are adjustable,i can figure out that the one wheel is 1 degree more negative than the other.how do i find out what settings i have in the first place?i can match 1 wheel to the others setting but how do i know that they are both right for the car,i just presumed this thing would tell me what setting i have on each wheel and then adjust accordingly, theres probably some easy way of doing this but i'm flumaxed at the mo.
any help as usual greatly recieved
oh well back to the decorating:(
park the car on the flat & level
measure the camber (so the spririt levels are 'flat')
jack car up, measure camber - work out what angle to set it to (with the car at the new 'in air' angle) adjust, drop the car & check it to make sure it's as it should be
I think that makes sense.

thought that may have been the way,its just that theres no actual settings on the gauge just the bubbles and 0-2 in 1/2 degree increments.gonna use the one side with slight negative camber as me marker and set the other to that setting, check handling and tyre wear.
its not massively negative but remember this being quite good for handling on the ibiza, though a bit harse on tyre wear on the inside of the tyre, bit of a suck it and see scenario,i take it you'd be interested in a borrow when we do yours?

Something to bear in mind Jase - check that the "flat" ground you're using when taking measurements is actually flat. You'd be amazed how many people try to make camber adjustments on sloping ground! As an example.... lets say you're making measurements on a 0.5deg slope. If you dial in 1 deg -ve camber each side, you've actually set it up to 0.5 deg -ve on one side and 1.5 deg -ve on the other!
Also (and i've made this point before, too), make sure your tyres are correctly inflated and your pie stash isn't piled up in one corner of the boot - either of these scenarios could see your car being on a p1ss when you're trying to set it up...
gonna have to find somewhere to do this then,my drive slopes and the road has camber too.

Sloping ground isn't necessarily a problem so long as you remember to allow for it. If your gauge is anything like mine, you can lie the long side of the gauge on the floor and adjust the spirit level on that side to check the side-to-side incline of the "flat" ground. Read off the slope and remember to allow for it when making adjustments...
