View Full Version : Timescale for 're learning' Revo boys!

There's been some mention of the engine having to 'learn' on the Revotechnik forums..
Can I ask for some more specific answers to the questions..

If I change fuel....how long should it take before the ECU has learnt the charecteristics of this new fuel?..ie one tank?..400miles?
Which variables adjust 'on the fly'
Is it just the anti knock sensor varying the ignition timing?
Are there any more 'intelligent' parameters changed.
How often is the anti knock sensor read? every combustion stroke or once a second or only one cylinder or all cylinders?
If the timing is altered by the anti knock routine..whats the point of having 95 ron and optimax setting to start with? won't they just be overridden?

Any more info you can chuck at me I will be interested in..even if I don't understand:(

from what i understand it takes between 10-20miles for the ECU to learn. There will be a slight difference. As with fuel it will adapt slightly but to get thje best out of optimax best to have timing set to 7 instead of 5 with the SPS module or when its chipped. however it wont like 95ron or lower then!

I've just put Optimax in now after running on SUL and I had the Revo installed with the Optimax settings and I wondered how long it would be before the set up will be all synchronised..?
10-20 miles you say?
I don't know if it should take so long as if you put crap fuel in by the time the engine is 'tuned' into the fuel it may be allready damaged if there has been excessive predetonation.(pinking).

Any excessive pre-detination/pinking/pinging will be sorted out by the ECU before any damage can occur. If a more advanced setting on the SPS3 is active but the fuel in the tank is not up to the required standard then pinking may be audible enough for most to hear. In this case it would be wise to reduce SPS3 timing setting.

Bosch themselves used to quote 2 days to re-adapt if the ECU was replaced. Problem with this was that they never stated 2 days driving or 2 days stood on the driveway??

In a previous job in a dealership I would like to think I could adapt an ECU within a medium roadtest. The ideal thing would be to mix up the conditions of driving i.e drive around town with some traffic signal stops and then take the car for a dual carraigeway/motorway run. This was normally enough to prevent customers coming back and saying that their car felt different after an ECU swap.

I would also advise not to raise the SPS3 timing setting as soon as the higher graded fuel is used. It would be beneficial to run at least one tank of optimax before altering the timing just to be sure that the lower graded fuel that was previously used is completely wasted.

p.s. The t-Shirt design brightened up an otherwise dull afternoon.

IIRC the Subaru method was to leave your ecu unplugged overnight.. then go find a long strech of road, preferably a hill, slow down.. put it in 5th and floor it, and keep it there for as long as possible (they reccomend a min of 20seconds) needs a bloody long road then :o
dunno if the same method would work for VAG engines tho.

I've driven through one and a half tanks of Optimax..around 400 miles and it feels much better now..
