View Full Version : Cupra R
I have a 'standard' cupra - recently bought with about 700 miles on the clock.
Is it possible to upgrade the engine side of things to the cupra R spec? If done by Seat or using the Seat appproved parts would this keep the car in warranty.
Anyone have any ideas on the cost?
I really want the increased power :D but don't want to invalidate the warranty

flapper, over to you mate!!
actually craig, just by chipping your cupra you will take the power above and beyond the power of an R!! should get about 195 bhp basically

That depends on which chip you choose.
BUT...some Seat dealers do offer the Cupra R 180bhp upgrade...for about a grand.
Will obviously keep the warranty intact..cos its done by SEAT themselves....but you will be out-done by all the peeps with 195bhp and beyond chips......
The list of aftermarket chips (non-seat) has increased over the last few weeks...more options than ever.
I'm sure owners of cars with the various chips will be explaining to you soon the merits of each one!
Does the Cupra R have 210 bhp against the Cupra 180 bhp?
Any ideas what the difference in the engine is? Is it just the ECU?
I spoke to someone on the helpline to ask if a chip would invalidate the warranty - he said yes - I asked why and he said because it would change the spec. I asked if it was safe to up the bhp a little and he said yes - "there is loads of scope in the engine, and it has been done with this engine". I asked again why would the chip effect the warranty then?and he said it just does!

Are you talking Ibiza Cupra R?
Is there a Leon Cupra R yet in the UK?
Ibiza Cupra R is 180bhp factory spec vs 156bhp std Ibiza 20VT.
Leon is 180bhp std.
To my knowledge the only warranty'd chip upgrade is an Amethyst/RSD-Oettinger one, which gives a specified 195bhp and with exhaust and intake pipe is specified at 207bhp.
A chipped Ibiza will be far better value than an Ibiza Cupra R and be faster to boot.

Sorry, I was meaning the Leon Cupra (thought I was in the Leon section DOH!)
I was hoping that even though the Leon Cupra R is not on sale here the modifications could still be done through SEAT.
from what some of the guys have said on this site i'd keep your warranty m8 ,i've got a seven year old gti and it's given me nowhere near as much greif as some of the the new cupra drivers have been getting if you can get a chip and keep your warranty i'd spend any extra to keep it,

Leon Cupra R is not in this country yet....and i'm not sure if it ever will!
It has 210bhp.....same chip/engine spec as the Audi S3.
However...i think it might just have a few more differences than just a chip/ECU!
You can still get a 195/210/240/280 upgrade from a variety of tuners though, who can sort you out whether you have a small or large budget.
Quite a few of the new Ibiza Cupra 20VT owners have had it chipped....so post a question in there!!
Depends where you take your car as to whether it is invalidated!
Say no more!
