This is really beginning to p*ss me off now. As posted previously I can get Alpine stuff at trade from work. Unfortunatley the unit I want (CDA-9812RR) Alpine wont have stock until the end of August due to massive demand from retailers.
Does anyone know if Halfords price match internet suppliers as I cant be bothered assing around fitting it. Just want to turn up, someone to slap it in for me and bugger off.
Anyone know?
Its a very very easy job to do yourself. Have a look at www.caraudiodirect.co.uk for a decent price.
Cheers Darryl

The head unit may be but the CD changer involves lots of messing around and as I said I dont have the time or inclination....

Mate I'm in maidenhead, dunno how far that is from you but I can sort out fitting the changer for you... As long as you get the 6 disc alpine changer it fits without much hassle... I have one in my glovebox...

I bought a CDA-9812RR from Hendon Car Stereo, ex-stock £260.00 including VAT.
I fitted it myself, however, talk to Hendon - maybe they have a fitter there?
The 98122RR is a good unit and drives the standard Leon speakers well, however, I recommend avoiding the MX (Media Expander) button - it makes the treble in particular sound forced and tinny.

Oops, I think Maidenhead is nearer than Hendon to Bournemnouth, so IceMan has got to be a better bet...
I took out the changer completely, as the 9812RR plays MP3, and thats enough music for me!
When you say trade price, how much can you get the 9812RR for?

Cant remember the exact figure but is was under £210.

Wow.
It seems that everyone on this site can get things cheaper than I can!:(
Anyone get me a discounted Revo?
Or a SuperChip? (LOL):D

Well, got fed up with waiting so I've ended up ordering from them, we'll find out on Monday eh ;). They were the only place I could find with the afformentioned unit in stock!!! Order tracking says the unit's at Southampton Parceline so should get it Monday morning...
Right, off to Halfords for the dash panel adapter :D

Cupramax - don't forget the aerial adaptor... (if you don't already have one that is...the original radio powers the aerial amplifier, the Alpine units don't have this built-in).
:)

Ermm, whats this lead saying WARNING HIGH CURRENT DRAW. So who didn't mention running a separate supply to the battery????? And did I see Pete mention somewhere about swapping a wire over in the connector?... which one?.. HELP.:confused2

Didn't realise that model had a high power amp inside. Basically the battery feed should be taken straight from the battery rather than the cars loom.
Then you will only use the ignition feed from the loom

Ah, that makes a bit more sence, yes its a 4x60w vdrive jobby. Where did you route yours through the bulkhead? Also what was this about disconnecting the diags lead on the loom so that it doesn't shag the ECU...

Seems all the new MP3 units use the V Power internal amps now.
Incidently just ordered the 9813 model today, means i miss out on the red illumination of the 9812 but Amber is close enough really.
Reason i wanted the 9813 is it used the Bass Engine Pro built in EQ which i want to control my sub more efficiently, other than that the 9812 is a super model.
Yes shock horror, i am finally getting round to doing my ICE. :p
Looking at ordering the DAB unit too in a few weeks.

On my old Leon we went thru a grommit behind the glove box, bit tricky to get to, but we had the glovebox out anyway to fit the changer so it wasn't that hard.
I do believe Pete found an easier route though.
Disconnecting the K-Line, well i never did on my other Leon, drawback was when APR tried to turn on my Cruise control, it didn't work because the Alpine seemed to break the K Lines loop. Just unplugged it from the ISO while they sorted the ECU.
Ive not heard of a non factory stereo blowing an ECU???
It shouldn't affect the ECU but there is a danger of blowing up diagnostic equipment plugged in to your OBDII port. If the stereo puts 12V on the line it will cause your dealer a problem.

The manual that comes with the 9812-RR says that it should be wired directly to the battery as Ice Man says.
I wired mine to one of the M6 terminal posts marked 30A on the bottom of the relay tray (behind the driver's side dash). (There is also a terminal Marked 75X but this is ignition switched). I think  that this terminal comes from the high current fuse on top of the battery???? It continuity checks to that point with both ends disconnected.
Does this sound OK to you, Ice Man?
I had my 10K service today - no probs except none of the (supposedly) pre-ordered warranty parts in stock...:(

Hmmm, thats sounds a bit easier than finding/making a hole in the bulkhead and running a lead to the battery. Is this behind the righ hand side panel where the fuses are?
El Dingo
29-07-2003, 21:11
Cupramax - Yes, but you also have to remove the dash panel under the steering wheel to get access.

Been looking at Autoleads site and it says you need a harness adapter for the Leon... is this true? not seen anyone else mention it. I thought the ISO connector just plugged straight into the loom. Getting very confused now

I already had a harness adaptor in the form of an Autoleads Nokia telephone kit with mute control (lets you use the speakers in the car for hands free telephone). Even so, there was some detective work to find out which wire to connect the radio mute to!
You do need an adaptor, as there are differences to how VAG wire the ISO connectors. Ice Man will know more about this...
If you are not incorporating a car 'phone kit, Halfords can sell you the harness adaptor. Note - you still need the aerial adaptor - this goes into the ISO plus on the car loom not on the harness adaptor, but - anyway - full(ish) instructions come with the aerial adaptor.

Thanks mate, I had a feeling this was going to turn into a right palava :D

Don't bother with the harness adapter. I have one here and it is just a straight through ISO block with the ariel power coming out separate. The Alpine will have this anyway.
If you look in the engine compartment behind the trunking you will see some wires passing through the soundproofing in the bulkhead. THere is a huge gromit behind there that is barely used... :D

AHA - caught!
I did a quick search on VAG-COM - beware the 'K' line controversy!
http://www.vag-com.co.uk/Manual2081/aftermarket-radio.html
This was my concern and also why I deleted!:)
Anyway - my Alpine unit works OK and is highly recommended especially for MP3 quality (except for the MX feature, which makes the sound quality rather forced IMHO, so I leave this feature turned off).

Right, got the dashboard apart after a bit of jiggling about and found the main power leads under the steering wheel, thanks El Dingo... thats gonna save a lot of messing about.
Only problem now is I cant seem to get the frigging Aura unit out, just wont shift . Have cut up an old credit card into strips and stuffed them in the holes in the unit but to no avail. Tried brute force but it feels like I'm dragging half the dashboard out... HELP!
 Looking at ordering the DAB unit too in a few weeks.
z do u mean complete head unit or can u buy a separate module do u need a special dab ariel.

Aura unit has two slots, one each side near the bottom of the unit. The Seat release keys make a kind of clicking sound as they release the latches, and they allow you to pull the unit out (they look a little like ring pulls with a leg sticking out). You should be able to release the catches by making up two thin bits of plastic or metal to push the latches over (like your credit card strips), then you need to hold them in while pushing gently from the back - a three handed job. Or do what I did - push my home-made keys in with both hands and hooked a free finger into the casette slot and pulled gently.
If stuck, pop down to the dealer and get him to release the unit. Then drive slowly:D home.
Good luck!

Just about at the point of sense of humour failure here. Connected up unit, all works fine. Tried to fit the metal chassis that comes with the unit and it wont fit in the hole..... Goes in about 2 inches and seems to jam on something. Is there something you have to take out to get it in?

Phew, finally got the bloody thing in after filing part of the inner tray of the centre console so the metal liner would actually go where it was supposed to....
Looks excellent and sounds very nice to though not quite as powerful as I was expecting considering it claims to have 3 times the output of the Aura.
I've got to take it out again in the morning as I forgot to empty the CD changer before fitting the new unit.... DOH!!! :p

Glad you got it in!
I was just trying to reply to your last message - hit the wrong button or something - another delete?!?!;)
Your 'other half' will no doubt wonder where you have gone, what with the number of possible adjustments...
BTW, with standard speakers I prefer:
HPF set to 80 Hz.
Trebel centre frequency 15 Khz.
Bass type 'off'.
Bass centre frequency 90 Hz, width 4.
Fader R-02
I have played with and since set Bass Focus and time correction to zero.
MX very definitely OFF.
As you can see, my wife wondered where I was every evening for the first week.
