Anyone else having turbo problems? Put my early March 02 Ibiza TDi Sport in for 20,000 mile service - one small problem - the turbo is leaking oil, its a sealed unit so I am now waiting for a new one. Dealer says they have never seen this before on a TDi, but have on a lot of Leon Cupras. Also had problems with the hoses coming off and no boost. The car is not driven hard, mainly motorway and A roads average fuel consumption about 52mpg so I can't see any reason for the problems unless its just a bad one.

Nice to see another welshy on here.
Who's your dealer mate???
Haven't heard of blown turbos on the tdis. My 150 has over 120000km on it, with no problems.
well mine doesnt spin up smoothly so it will probably go at some point! but Seat cant find anything wrong with the car.. typical! just hoping it goes before the warranty is out.

What kind of idle times do you peeps give your cars before starting off / shutting down??
I have always followed *TB Turbo's* advice, which is...
15 - 30 seconds idling before driving off, to allow for full oil pressure around the entirity of the engine
30 - 60 seconds idling before engine shut-down (longer time for harder driving) to allow a) the turbo to stop spinning (as it spins at 70000+rpm's me thinks!), and b) to allow the bearings to cool before the flow of oil is stopped (thus preventing "baking" the oil in the bearings).
I follow this in part on NA cars as well as Turbos - the NA's mainly to allow the engine to "settle" before driving off & shutting down...
Any comments??
(p.s. current Diesel Clio is a dCi65, so turbo'd, but no intercooler!)
I didn't bother with the warm-up one, but I did the cool down. I also used to come through the village rather than off the dual carriageway exit nearest my house when I was heading home.
All this is to prevent oil burning onto the turbo bearings though, it won't make any difference to oil leaks.
I haven't heard of any others with the problem but assuming yours is a Mk4 then it's a very early car - even earlier than mine was - so it could have been an abused demonstrator?

Blown turbos on stock TDI130/150 are not that common but happen sometimes, I´ve known a few cases and heard of some more. Of course when chipped, the turbo´s life expectancy will be shortened due to increased boost/stress/surging and are more likely to fail.
But in the end of the day, carefull maintenance/driving and luck! will keep your turbo safe. ;)
yep i keep the same idling times as you 'cuprar'. keeps the engine sweet as you say.
