and finally. the amount of movement while everything is secure
i get the feeling that something was fitted wrong back when it was warranty replaced.
when the top nut comes off, the lever comes off then theres a longer bolt with a nut welded on halfway down, but the head of that welded on nut is a bit thin to hold the whole base of the lever so it isnt very secure feeling. any thoughts?

Thats a shed load of slack movement you have their. No way is that right..
the engagement should be +ve and not sloppy like yours looks.
I would agree that it probebly was never reinstalled correctly when replaced under warranty. You may have suffered further wear tho with it having been like this for some time.
I am not an expert on g'boxes as I leave that to Alan @ Autotechnik, but he is'nt exactly local... S'hampton.
Who installed your warranty g'box? Can you return it to them?
It would be obvious that its wrong.

seat dealer, usually pretty good but are standing firm that it wasnt their fault, they wont look at it unless they are charging me!!
car goes in on friday for a silly warranty reverse light issue that keeps popping its head up, i might have a quiet word with as bloke i know in the workshop who will look at it for me.
the movement is just plain stupid its sometimes impossible to push on through 1-3 gears cause its so slack.
