I have a short while to buy car.A Toledo really takes my fancy,2.3 v5 150 bhp. The missus thinks a mondeo is a 'safer option' Can you all talk her out of it !(ps she has tight hold of 'strings)

if she's got any petrol in her veins just go for a run in the V5, and give it some revs - it sounds awesome.

the v5 will use more petrol, but it's all swings & roundabouts.

I like the toldedo to look at, but the price is pretty keen.

My friend's father has a new 2.0 Mondeo. It's not the ultimate in image or much else really but value for money it is.

If you prefer an engine with more grunt and character get the V5. I can't comment on build quality of the V5, running costs, insurance specificaly but I think the new Mondeo (I assume you're not buying a ropey P reg) has much improved in build. My P Ibiza is better built than a P Fiesta and has *touch wood* had far fewer problems (none to date of note) - compared to a friend's 1.3 Fiesta.

You can sell your wife on: exculsivity so you won't look like everyone else, the V5 looks relatively expensive but it isn't really, look 'classier' than the Mondeo, more toys (?). Rave about the Mondeo's class-leading driving dynamics then you will bore her into choosing the V5;) :p And you can tell her you get a VW in disguise and all the associated attributes that go with that without the higher capital initial outlay:)

If you want to go OTT make some analogies to her eg:

- Mondeo is common. You don't want ppl to think you are common.
- V5 is sexy... compliment her...
- V5 is Mediterranean, full of zest and passion etc etc.
- Mondeo is Ford, is American.. dont' you just love George Bush?
- V5 speaks class much more so than Mondeo - reflecting the image you may want to exude

Better?;) :D

Cheers guys:cheers: amusing!!
Incidently the car I'm looking at is found at Lookers,Manchester(autotrader.co.uk) Search for SEAT Toledo £7000-£8000 range.
Any chance of taking a look and a 'valuation' before I drive over the Pennines for a butchers?
The big sell starts today armed with anti bushisms:D

Try selling it to her in terms of quality. A lot of the parts in the V5 are Audi and VW.

With the v5 you also get a lot of goodies.

Service costs aren't too bad either.

And the big bonus it's not a ford.

Mondeo == Rep Car.

I've had my V5 150BHP for nearly a year now. I love it to bits. I am also fortunate? to drive a vast array of fleet demonstrators, from Honda's to Ford's to VW's etc..., and it is always a pleasure to get back into the V5.

The engine tone is terrific, it pulls superbly and is not too bad on fuel, average 33 - 35 mpg on a motorway run.

The price seems a little high though, mine cost £8,500 in September last year with 18K on the clock. It wasn't from a main dealer but from a carsupermarket, look around as I'm sure you'll find one cheaper.

See the link below for a V5 (170 BHP) on this site recently. This should give you a good idea of what you can get for your money..

Get a bit of exclusivity in your life, get a v5.

I'd say it's an honest site :)

It depends how big your family is. And to be totally honest, you will only comfortably fit wee persons in the back.

But in my humble opinion :

Ford Mondeo -

Go for the V5, lots more character and NOT a rep car. Don't know if they are still the same, but a few mates have had Fords and they've always complained about the quality of them too.

Do a search on this outfit. There are a couple who have had bad experiences with them:(

jam
29-07-2003, 13:36
Thanks for your replies:D The search goes on.The v5 has sold so Im on the lookout for another.Any ideas on how long these v5's go on for? I ve spotted on with 52000miles on a Y plate but was worried about its lifespan

The V5 is a strong chain driven (as opposed to cam-belt) engine, straight out of the VW Golf / Bora. So, with proper maintenance I would expect to see 200,000 miles on these cars in years to come - no worries.

52K - should just about be run in and getting quicker at that mileage ;)

I' tke a V5 any day too, but at the end of the day I think you will find that 100% of all reviews on family cars say the Mondeo is still the best.

Depreciation is also a consideration, mondeos and Toldeos depreicate seriously fast!

My dad bought a 2 year old mondeo 2.0 Zetec (It was S reg back then) for £2600!

jam
29-07-2003, 14:45
Thanks Stu I hadnt realised it wasnt a cam belt driven car.Mind you I hadnt realised there was any alternative! My knowledge of cars can be termed as limited:confused:
Depreciation shouldnt be a problem hence the enquiry about the miles you can sqeeeze from a v5.I only do 10k max a year anyway.

Sorry to keep bugging you all but anyone got a thought or two on the 1.8 20v? Is this engine any good? How do the 'toys' stack up compared to the 2.3 v5?:o

redv5
29-07-2003, 15:23
I think the 1.8 20 v was available as a S or SE model , bit like the Leon.

So SE
no leather
no electric seats
no memory seats
no CD player as std
no cruise control
no trip computer
no rear seat headphone sockets
no rear sun blind as std

ans the S
was as above but
no climate contol
no sprts seats
no alloys
no rear electric windows

just being devils advocate, but have you thought about a mondeo 2.5 v6 st24. At the right price it's alot of car - get the V6 roar too. I have to say out of the 2 u mentioned, i'd go for the V5 - a bit different, i guess that's why i got the leon cupra. It's nice to be different.

Thanks:) Any ideas on how long the clutch lasts on 2.3 v5? The car I'm looking at has 52000miles,if it hasn't had a new one how long am I looking at and how much?

PhilNeo
30-07-2003, 12:34
Unfortunately, that's a bit like asking how long is a piece of string.

It all depends on the previous owner's driving style etc.

For example, on my Cordoba, I have just changed all 4 tyres for the first time after doing 50,000 miles.

Other people on this forum have said that they have changed their tyres after 6,000 miles!!

It could be a similar situation with the clutch I am afraid, but having said that, maybe because the V5 is not really as sporty as other cars, you would hope it has been driven with respect.
:)

Stubill
30-07-2003, 12:41
Yeah I reckon so. Clutch life really is going to be down to your and previous owners driving style.

However, not wishing to be alarmist, I had a clutch failure on my previous 150 V5, the actual internal spring ?? mechanisim detroyed itself. Had a new one under warranty, but the cost for a full clutch assembly (not just friction material as you would normally change) would have been around the 600 quid mark.

I would suggest looking at the average clutch life on a V5 golf or Bora as a reasonable estimation on the Toledo. Also, just ask the parts guy when you go to look at the car, they will be able to give you a price for fitting new clutch to a V5.

thanks guys:) Well the deed is done.I've joined the club, bitten the bullet, walked the walk etc'etc. Now the proud owner of a 2.3 v5 170bhp silver scary car! Drove it on a test drive like a nun 1/2 hr early for mass:D A problem associated with ownership of an L reg 405 estate(0-60 in the space between lunch and bedtime).
Anyway £7500 fr a y reg beast cant be bad!

Well Ive bought the V5(170) home after an age waiting for a cash transfer to happen.Four days to transfer money electronically? I could have hopped backwards to Nottingham with a bag of cash and got the car home quicker!
Anyway. What a car!!!!!!!!!!!!:laff1: :laff1: Do these radar gizmos pick up police cars zapping you from the rear(so to speak)?:p
How do you drive slowly in this car?
'Due care and attention'?? I spent more time watching the little arrow on the sat nav than the road.
I promise to calm down and drive the thing like my grandads vauxhall viva(not!)
