View Full Version : Oil Change Intervals?

Car magazine have a long term report on their Leon, say it's great but queried the 10000 mile oil change interval - their oil was treacly by 10000 miles.

As someone who is used to oil changes on Honda's every 6000 miles and who changes the oil on my Ibiza every 5000 miles, does anyone have any views on the interval?

FWIW, the oil on my Leon looks OK at 5000 miles, but as I do about 15000 miles a year I might get it done at 7500. Thoughts anyone?

Steve

P.S. SWINNY need not respond, as you want my money :-)

The only reason that servicing is becoming extended on all cars not just SEAT is that the fleet companies want less frequent servicing to keep the lease costs down for the end user.

Here at Amethyst we are quite happy to stick to the manufacturers guidelines of 10k but just remember you get what you pay for so doing 5k intervals is good practice.

Also using a good oil helps - we use Castrol Magnatec which has a slick 50 type addative that reduces all the initial wear as not all the oil drains into the sump.

So we are happy to take anybody's money for interim services.

I guess I knew the answer already - I'll give you a call to book in for an oil / filter change on the Leon.

Cheers

Hmmmm...

I was going to get the misses to drop the car in next week, but perhaps I'll try for a Saturday now.

I am dialling as we speak...

Got my oil changed at 5000 miles only because the car was due for it's 1st service/ annual inspection then (hardly drive the car). The dealers used Castrol Magnatec which I belive is pretty good.

Must get out more and open up the throttle :drive1:

I change the oil in mine every 5000 miles. Sometimes it comes out looking like you could put it straight back in again, and sometimes it looks like I should have changed it a bit earlier...

...that all depends on the driving I've been doing though - lots of motorway driving (so quickly racking up the miles) and the oil looks OK. Lots of commuting and it looks tired. Track day - really takes it out of the oil!!

The general concensus I've read (not just on here) is that turbo cars need thir oil changed every 5000 miles, because of the abuse the turbo gives the oil.

I remember a discussion like this many moons ago!

Some folk said that the new oils will last for 10K miles

In my old LC the oil was changed every 5K miles at my request

got to admit im thinking of changing the oil in my car more often than once a year.

checked it the other day and it looks old already. :thumbd: car was only serviced a month ago. :-o

im assuming the stealer changed it of course. they deffo did something to the oil coz it was way over the maximum which seems to b how the stealers like to do an oil change. lol

5k miles and mobil 1 sounds good to me

Erm... why change at 7500 miles, when in a further 2500 miles time you'll need to change it again anyway for the service????

Change it at 5000 miles, then it will be changed in 5000 miles time again at the service...

I always change the oil in any car that I own at 5000 miles, this is peace of mind for myself.
The industry that I came from only change the oil when the oil sample that is taken says so, which is the ay I can see the car manufacturs going down this route to save more money.

I also change mine between services! Flush first of course ;)

I also use slick 50 additive which seems to have stopped the burning of alot of oil when you thrash it! Which is nice :)
