View Full Version : Origin B2 Speed Detector Review on the site
Many Thanks to Scott alias Syphon for his superb review on the Origin B2.
Note Scott has also organised a potential group buy discount, all the details of which are contained with his comprehensive review.
Which you can read here

Wow, quite impressed with all the "real world" features (didn't read the techie list...). Particularly like the warning that you are approaching a school when there are likely to be kids around, nice safety feature!
To be honest - up until five minutes ago I didn't think those things were worth it, but after reading the review...
I'll be at Rockingham for those who are coming so if anyone wants a demo pop over and say hello.
The unit can be switched into demo mode so you can get an idea of what the alerts are like.

I look forward to seeing the unit on Sunday

That's one serious review. Deffo gonna have to go over it again tomorrow at work. Have been debating getting something like this (or Bel remote radar which might suit me better).

You da man, nice work
Shame the radar unit to pick up mobile radar traps is an optional (££) extra!
Great review though.

Excellent review, I will be interested in buying one once I'm back off holiday :)
The Radar unit should be available at the end of September, so may wait until then.
 Ian

I'd also recommend having a look at some of the more DIY solutions based on Pocket PC's, which give you added benefits, such as Satnav, MP3 playback etc, as well as speed camera warnings, esp if you already have a radar/laser detector, plus mobile internet/email etc if you have the right phone.
A good site for info is Pocket GPS (http://www.pocketgps.co.uk/) which has a specific area re speed camera detection.
You end up with loads of wires but a very flexible system, and the cost is broadly the same. The only difference may be in the quality of the camera databases, as this uses (free) public domain ones (which are very good..) compared to the ones owned by the detector companies (which I have no experience of, but guess will be good as they want you to keep resubscribing!)

Vlerry Impressive....does it detect VC hiding in the bushes? :D
Nice bit of kit that...deffo worth considering.
Dor.
Just thought you should be made aware that...
Spoke to the ol' man (trafik cop).
The laser is pointed at the car thru crosshairs. Once the cop presses the trigger it fires a beam at the car that is for 100th of a second. Typically they point this at the number plate which has an accuracy of about a foot. As soon as they have pressed the trigger its got your speed and therefore game over so it seems that this part of the device is really no use.
But.... otherwise this is a fantasic review. Have you ever thought of a career in journalism :)
Look forward to seeing it on Sunday.

I believe that is being considered as an optional add on in the future. ;)

Yeah but they have to do it between 2 pints so when the fire the first shot you then have a chance to slow down dramatically 9if safe) before the scecond one is fired - at lest that was my understanding of it
am i wrong ?

From what I have read the laser detectors rely on the scatter from cars ahead of you that are being zapped. The further you are away the more chance you have of catching this "scatter" with the detector.
Yes if you are the car being targeted you will probably not have enough time to react. However it can sometimes take at least three attempts to get a reading as they have to hit a reflective part of your car (something that will bounce the laser back) ie. registration plate.
The next step is to fit a laser diffuser to the unit which will detect and block their laser signal for 8 seconds and alert you with enough time to adjust your speed. After the 8 seconds has passed the diffuser switches off allowing them to get a reading of you going at the correct speed. ;)
But these devices are naughty as far as the law is concerned. ;)

Two people have e-mailed me so far to say they intend to buy one. A few more are interested.
I will start a thread of the group buy members only when they have confirmed that they have placed their order.

The blow up one or the dole? :D :D

Syphon,
After reading the excellent review I'm definitely interested. What made you choose the Origin over the Road Angel?
I'll do a bit of research into the options over the next few days then drop you an e-mail I think.

Cheers.
More features, nicer unit. Much tidier looking.
Newest model on the market, and it came out top in a few reviews I read. :)

One for putting me in the right direction to purchase the Origin and two the installation instructions.
It arrived at 8.20am this morning after ordering it Thurdsday afternoon. I also got a courstesy call yesterday from a nice lady saying she would put "please deliver saturday" all over the parcel.
Job done it worked but the postie woke me.
Of course unpacked everything to find screws and allen key missing but I worked out that the fixing plate was already atatched. :D
So at about 11am decided to fit it.
Easy peezy!!!
At 12.30pm I was booting down the road after changing a few settings and a nice young lady told me there was a gatzo up ahead.
Great!!! :D Well impressed.
I thoroughly recommend it!!!!
 Scott

No probs. Steve. Glad you are pleased with it. :)
Update on the discount
I have spoken to Origin and they are now prepared to offer the 5% discount to site members at the time of order.
RRP: £429.95
You pay: £408.45
If we get up to 10 orders then the other 5% will be re-inbursed.
I have had about 20 e-mails about this with people interested. All the more reason to place your order now.
E-mail me for more information.
Scott
PS. I am also in discussions with Origin about the possibility of attending future site meets / track days.
forgot to say that i bought one , got a good deal from a local shop "mates rates " and wow im impressed miles better then my old snooper sd815 , the only thing i don't like is you don't know if the cameras are on . as it's gps . oh well not to worry as i used to slow down even if the snooper didn't go off . weird thing is i had a lazer alert out side my house last night (i live in a cul-d-sac) strange ! but a top bit of kit my advise is to get one . when i have some spare cash im getting the jammer too :)
I picked one up too, got it at Weston Wheels for 399, very impressed so far!
Going west down the M3 yesterday at 70+ between junctions 1 and 2 when the laser alert goes off! No obvious police car or white van with the doors open and drove down the same stretch about an hour later and exactly the same thing happened. I think it was a false alarm, but was just after a bridge so may go see if I can get a more precise location and ask if Origin are aware of anything in the area.
Anyone else had what would appear to be false alert?

When I asked a while back they told me it had been designed not to false alert. Might be worth asking them though.
