View Full Version : 1.8 16v engine
Is the 1.8 16v engine as used in early Ibiza GTis the same as that used in the Mk2 16v Golf GTi?
Also, what is the tuning potential of the 1.8 16v engine like compared with the 2.0 16v ABF engine?
Cheers.

id say wou would get similar gains if it was done properly, jase p used to have a 1.8 16v ibiza and he sat level with my 2.0 16v abf cordoba round alconbury, so they arnt too lacking from standard.
Hi
I have a 96 Ibiza GTI that was originally a 1.8 16V with 'rod change' 020 gearbox. These parts as far as I can see are pretty much 16V golf (KR-type) but it was managed by a digifant system with a distributor (and no crank sensor) rather than the K-jet management system found on most 1.8L golfs - I think the later 2L 16V golfs are digifant.
Now here's where it gets interesting....2L 16V golfs (Mk3's) have ABF engines as do 2L 16V Ibiza's. They both have cable change (02A) gearboxes. These 2L engines are not quite the same as the 1.8L engines - they are 14mm taller to start with due to longer blocks and con rods - but many of the parts are interchangable. The heads look the same but the ports are different shapes and sizes - the heads are interchangable. These engines are all digifant controlled and have distributors but also crank sensors so the distriutor is only for dispensing spark and not for timing as such.
There was a 2L version of the 1.8L engine however - the 9A engine - that is also called a 2L short block - this was fitted to corrado's, passats and US golfs. This engine is a direct replavement for the 1.8L and this is what I have in my car.
The 1.8L 16V was about 135 bhp as standard whilst the 2L was more like 150. The 1.8 always lacked a bit of torque and had to be revved to get it to move - making it 2L improved things a lot - I would say this is the best thing that can be done to a 1.8L. After this, cams and head work etc can get you upto 180bhp with a 2L. Over 180 usually requires induction system mods like throttle bodies or carbs.
Mine is now 215 with throttle bodies fitted and with a close ratio gearbox is a bit of a flyer.
Good luck
Cheers

out of the 2 i prefer the abf 2ltr16v,the 1.816v does need to driven hard to get the best out of it(great fun all the same),i find my self changing down less to over take,in the ibiza i would drop it to 3rd gear to get passed an hgv for example, now i can usual do it in 4th in the (heavier)cordoba.
1.816v was pushing out around 145 bhp with induction and cat free exhaust.hope this helps:cheers:
btw brend,i wasn't even trying @alconbury:p
Cheers guys. I'm looking around for a replacement for my ageing Swift GTi hillclimb/sprint car and would like to go for a Seat if possible. My main championship is the ASWMC (South West) and has an up to 1800cc class which would suit the 1.8 16v Ibiza. I just wanted to be sure that I'd still be competitive in all the other championships which run up to 2000cc.

Hi
I have been doing some sprinting with my car this year - 1.4L - 2.0L modified production. I have gone mod prod since I have no interior and that immediately makes the car mod prod. I find myself up against very quick machines - 2L 16V Mk1/2 escorts and the like that are 260-280 bhp and 700-800kg. My car is not quick enough to beat them and is unlikely to be if I'm honest - there are not enough bits available off the shelf to make an Ibiza light enough - no light panels/bonnet/doors/tailgate for example. My car is likely to be around the 900-950kg mark in sprint trim and I could do with loosinbg another 100kg and make the change to full slicks to get the time's I need.
Basically - if I was choosing a sprint car from scratch, I dont think I would pick an Ibiza (currently) if I wanted to win. IMO, you will need every cc. if you are up against 2L cars. Despite the difficulties, I am persevering with it - I guess I get as much fun prepping and developing the car as I do from driving it.
If I was to down group to 1.4-2L road modified - would necessitate putting some interior and rear seats in and running on road tyres (list 1A) - then the ibiza would be really good I think - I would be up against a gaggle of 205GTI's and my ibiza is quicker than these.
Best of luck - there's not many Ibiza's sprinting to my knowledge (I'm the only one as far as I know) so be good to have a few more
Cheers

Rob - Steve may fare a little better down here in the South West - first off due to the class breaks being a little different:
Up to 1400
1401 to 1800
1801 to 2600
2600 up
Also, ASWMC does not require List 1A for road production - anything road legal is fair game, hence many run Yokohama A032's (List 1B IIRC), etc.
As we have discussed many times before, playing the regs is often half the battle...
Steve - would you be looking to run the car in road prod or mod prod?
