i have a kenwood kdc-6090r single cd headunit, it's the type with the manual removable mask.

it started playin up the other day and now it doesn't work at all. here's what happened.

first the screen stopped workin (was blank, button lights still worked),
then the buttons stopped functioning (could still operate it with remote),
then remote stopped workin,
then whole unit stopped playin (no button lights now).

now i'm no expert but it has a strip with wires in that goes from the face plate into the unit (this moves when the front is opened or rotated, looks like sticky tape with metal through it), i reckon this has worn out and replacing it will cure it.

i can't afford a new unit or the £60-£90 bein quoted by a car stereo repair place nearby.anyone know if theres anywhere i could buy a new 'strip' from?

Yeah it sounds like the ribbon cable has gone or the connections are just dirty...

Unfortuatley if it's the ribbon cable it's a special part and I doubt you will get one anywhere else :(

What do you drive mate? Just noticed you're in Maidenhead aswell :D

An equivalent bit of cable you could probably get from Maplin/RS/Farnell etc (would need a closer look), its the laybor involved in stripping down both the faceplate and the main unit as the reason for the high cost. The cable will litterally cost pence.

Problem is it will be one of those plastic mega thin cables not your standard HDD type of cable. So even making yourself one might be difficult, without looking at it properly you'll never know though.

iceman, i drive a red k plate golf vr6 (it's a seat's cousin!!) with debaged grill and really nasty alloys! what's your motor? (EDIT, der, says on your post, what year?)

i half striped down the unit and am confident i could replace it. any idea where to get a proper one from, maybe kenwood would be a good start?!

Nice vr6 is a nice motor. Mines an 02 Cupra. Pics are on my site www.icecavern.co.uk look in the gallery and it's the blue leon... ;)

I know where you might be able to get one from actually, I'll dig out the details of the place ;)

After half stripping it down, can you get to the solder joints at both end. If you can, buz it out with a multimeter before you go through the hassle of sourcing a new one and fitting it.
