Hey Guys,

I'm thinking of chopping in my 1.6S Leon for a Toledo. My dad drives a nice 170BHP version which i rather like but I don't think my budget will stretch to a 170.

Since i've put on quite a few motorway miles in my leon i'm thinking a toledo with a few miles on already (say region 40-70K) will give me a bit more refinement and power on the motorway, and hopefully and a really nice price. Looking on the trader i could get a year 2000 for around 5-7000.

Just a question for anyone who has and opinion on the 150 in comparison to the 170? Anyone driven both?

Did SEAT change the engine to a 170 for any reason? I see the fuel economy is slightly better for a 170.

Other cars i am considering are:
Volvo S40 T4
SAAB 900/93 Turbo
Maybe an Ibiza Cupra (maybe the boyracer in me!)

Cheers.
Damian Smith.

The V5 engine was upgraded accross the VAG group from 10valve to 20valve.

Never driven either, but the press certainly felt it was a big improvement......

I have owned 2 150 V5's and 1 170 V5. Both cars are excellent in their own right, but the 170 does have the edge overall as you would expect. The brakes are also larger on the 170 and I have found that they had a far better feel over the brakes in the 150.

The 170 models has the following specification over the 150.

Sat-Nav
Auto dipping rear view mirror
Rain sensing wipers
Switchable traction control

For covering long distances in comfort either model will perform the job admirably. A very underated car in my opinion.

Out of the three that I owned my favourite was the artic grey 150 with full leather and elec sunroof.

The 150 did use more petrol than the 170 but not enough to worry about, I used to average 26-27 MPG from the 150 and 29-30 from the 170.

Hope this helps

The brakes are exactly the same on the 150 & 170. 312mm front & 256mm rear. I ran a 150 for a year and it was a good car, lurvely smooth engine with a good rasp. Had a loan 170 while the R was in the dealers for some bits and bobs and to be honest it really didn't feel that different. As mentioned above though you do get a few extra toys on the 170.

Toledo V5 150 is a brilliant car - more characterful sound that 170. My 150 did 128k without missing a beat - a hugely underrated car, but one which falls between stools as far as the motoring press. I revel in being different! Got Cupra R now, which is a different but fulfilling experience. 32 mpg from both vehicles.

thanks for the input guys.

I think i'll try and hunt down a 150 to try this weekend.

Got to get some leather!!

The price difference between the 150s and 170s seems a little too much since i'm essentialy trying to get a lot of car for little money.

Damian.

Not on my car!!

Even the rear brakes were Vented discs.

Those specs came from SEAT's website.... Leon Cupra R's are the only car they put vented rears on.:wink2:

Looking at manufacturers websites they actually quote 288mm x 25mm vented discs on the front and 232mm x 9mm solid discs on the back for the 150 V5, however the 170 V5 as you say has 312mm on the front and 256mm on the rear and on my car at least they were vented on the rear.

I was shocked too.

The reason that I know they were a different set up was because my aftermarket wheels that I had fitted to the 150 did not fit the 170 as the front discs were bigger.;)

Not trying to create an argument just informing you of my experience.

Perhaps another case of pedro fitting what was available.

Perhaps someone on here with a 170 V5 can shed some light, vented or not vented? :dunno:

I'll check the ventedness/non-ventedness of the rears tonight and let you know!

This is weird. My 150 definately had the 312 + 256 setup. It was an April 99 model, one of the first batch in the UK.

Re the wheels... what size were they? Both the 150 & 170 had 16" wheels (admittedly of different design) so dont undertsand how aftermarket ones wouldn't fit???

As stated earlier more likely a case of fit what they had at the time, there have been loads of similar stories regarding other things like foldy wing mirrors and the like.

I think it is just your luck what you get.

Yes both cars had 16" wheels as standard and they were bought for the 150 but they did not fit the 170 as the front calipers hit the spokes of the wheels.

The wheels are actually a VW, Seat wheel which in the book states that they fit the V5 toledo, but they didn't fit the 170 that I had.

Had a quick look last night, and I can confirm that both front and rear disks are ventilated.

BTW it was registered in March 2002, if makes any difference whatsoever!

The 170 does not have the edge on the 150 in everything.

170 does not have

electric memory seats and wing mirrors or rear headphone sockets.

Depends which one you have. My 170 had all the above as standard, I think the newer ones now don't come with as many toys.

As usuall SEAT adjusting the spec when it suits them. Mine came with 2 sets of master keys which was great as I'm 6ft and my better half is 5ft 2. Seats and mirrors auto adjust to which key was put in the ignition.... Best feature I've ever had in a car. :cloud9:

In all the Seats that I have owned, I have never had two master keys.

I was told that only the Alhambra had two master keys.

I can agree all 3 V5's I have had had all of the above specification including the 170.

Although I did say that my favourite was a 150. :D

I agree. The 150 10 valve is a beut of an engine. I personally prefer it to the 170 20 valve (had both). 170 is obviously quicker and I also find it uses less fuel than the 150. Could be down to the 170 being drive by wire and the 150 being a cable driven throttle.

Also, as mentioned earlier in this thread, the very early 170's including mine, still came with memory seats and foldy mirrors, but the later 170's have the dynamic Sat Nav.

The V5 bark is louder and sweeter from the 150 10 valve lump, the 170 20 valve is a free revving number. (I would compare the difference to the 8V v 16V debate).

Would thoroughly recommend the 150 10V - destined to be a classic.

Cheers.

Hi Folks

My 170 (Jan2002) has all the trimmings bar rear headphone sockets (tho' I must admit to never having looked) the memory seats and mirrors are fantastic especially if you have drivers of vastly differing size (6'2" and 5') plip your key (I have 2 although this was never standard) and open the door and the seat and mirrors automatically adjust) cooool

The brakes are definitely vented front and rear and are a fantastic setup loads of feel and massive stopping power!

All in all the 170 is a great car!
