Wheel Arch Detrius Buildup

Hi,
Cautionary note here. My dad fitted a new front spot to my Arosa Sport today, and while pulling bits of plastic away from the wheel arch uncovered a bucket full of leaves, twigs, dirt, mud and generally any form of road-going crap known to man. He cleared it out and then checked it on his Arosa 1.0 - same thing. Here's some pics:

I took off the rear arch splats on my Ibiza, and found that there was a load of mud up in behind them! Looks like the dirt gets behind them from the gap where the suspension strut is. Not a very good design:(

No, not really :(

Dad's cut a hole in the bottom of the arch lining in a bid to get the stuff to drop out a little easier. Might be worth it?
