View Full Version : Restriction on Length of Signature

RobT
23-09-2003, 12:27
Hi

A bit of a grumble I'm afraid - I am fed up with endless pages of signatures that, in some cases, are getting rediculously long -

I have a 15" screen and some signatures now almost fill the complete screen when in Internet Explorer.

Its getting to be "hunt the interesting bit"

I think there should be a restriction in the signature file size and length.

Ave it

Rob

agreed Rob (although I guess I'm guilty too)

CGTi have a width restriction - I'll have a look & see if we can administer a 'voluntary' sizing

also - you know you can turn this off on your options?

Mark

yes, agree and also tend to feel I'm a culprit as well

hopkinsgm

I'm inclined to agree. Also there's an increasing number of sigs with pictures that just munch bandwidth and result in increased download times - is this really necessary? Clearly an avatar simply isn't enough for some folks... I believe that in many cases, the pictures used in sigs are actually hosted elsewhere, which generally serves to increase download times even further...

We can remove IMG from use in Signatures

Or

We can enforce an image size reduction? - manual

ZBOYD
23-09-2003, 12:47
Or you can just use your options and turn off the signatures, so they dont display for you.

Being honest here, Bandwidth of the server is unaffected, its very fast and on a very big pipe.

I agree some are OTT and people should use their own judgement to maybe slim them down a little.

But as i say the option is there to not display them in you USER CP anyway.

OK, originally it was a witty pun.. perhaps it needs reviewing (sorry - used to the broadband big screen lifestyle now... ;) )

Hmmm...

Agree to an extent. I'm sure image file size isn't an issue as basic use of saving as .jpg will vastly reduce file sizes. NOT a bandwidth issue.

In terms of physical size on screen i'll reveiw mine too :p

Spencer bit will go after this weekend.
Scott is going to review the VC sig pic too.
That's should reduce it to about 50-60%

As ive said, its less of a hardship to go into the USER CP and just turn them off so if you dont want signatures cluttering your pages, then you dont need to see them.

Remember even if you turn them off, so you can't view them, others will still see your signature, so if you want a signature to be viewed by others it still will be.

Thats the solution in my opinion,i KNOW the server can cope with the bandwidth, its down to individual users to change their own settings so they don;t have to view or download the signatures or avatars which may slow thier own individual bandwidth.

But the server is not struggling at all, as Martyn said the other week its gone something like 200 days now without a reboot.

The longer than a month inactive rule on the Shite U Write section also aids in trimming the database of unneccersary load.

In a way i do agree with Rob though in that i think some of the larger Signatures could be simplified, and those with very large IMG links need to think about resizing them. as they just take over the page.

These smaller ones like i have belwo are fine in my opinion.

And if your on dialup, then i suggest turning off signatures anyway, the whole experience will be much faster, you can also turn avatars off too, that again will make viewing the forum on a dial upo that much easier.

At the end of the day, the signatures contain no real inportant stuff other than of a person's personaility and/or for showing off their cars.

My opinion is that if you dont want to have to scroll thru them all, turn them off, it take only a moment to do, and can be switched back on as and when you like.

I'm on dial up and experience no probs with sigs. or avatars; In fact they enhance the whole SCN experience!:laff1:

i know there are some restrictions on some sites and yes i am one of the guilty culprits.

I was thinking the other day how long it would take for someone to mention this!

as ZBOYD said, just turn the autosignature option off then the problem is solved! i think that is the best option as then it wont get too many peoples backs up with restricting them etc.

the site has a good bandwidth, i dont experience any slow problems even with Dial up.

Perhaps to solve the problem, all members of SeatCupra.net should get FREE 17" flat screen monitors as standard when they join the site to solve any display problems and also as a sign of loyalty!:D ;) :p :)

really there's two issues here. the length of signatures and ways of speeding up access. personally, it's the amount of bandwidth wasted by downloading needless images that p1sses me off.

Re: turning off sigs - it's a simple suggestion, but i don't feel it's the answer. there's often useful information in the text. For example, if someone has a technical problem, the car the problem refers to is often in the sig. I usually just refer to "my Ibiza" in posts - why? Because my car details are in my sig... i have no real gripes with the text (so long as it's reasonably sensible) - it's the images that seem to download before i get little things like clicky buttons so i can post a reply on a thread...

Great, so what do we have? a completely text based forum with no smileys, banners or logos?

IMHO that's a backward step. If your having problems downloading with reasonable speed I would suggest either you have

A - Duff broadband (Ok Dial-upers might be suffering with living in the sticks)
B - Sigs with big file sizes in

Some people like sig some don't. I personally think it creates a bit of personality in the forums. I alos thing that yes, there should be a restriction on total physical size on screen, but certainly not anywhere like restricting to a few lines of basic text. People should be able to put what the hell they like within a sig as long as it's releavant, 'reasonably' sized and have amde an effort to reduce file sizes.

My penneth...:D

But G how often does that arise, every post or reply to a post, doesn't invlove having to gte details from someones signature.

And as ive said, even if you turn off viewing signatures, everyone who has the option turned on will still see your signature regardless.

And if your answering a question, and think the users signature may contain some valuable info for your reply, simple, turn the sigs back on temporarily so you can see them, then switch it off again afterwards.

Its the best solution.

Tony the size of your signature image is well OTT, if it was reduced, or even like i do, use just a link to a pic of your car rather than displaying it as an IMG, that would be much more acceptable, its ridiculously big at the moment.

Individual users have it in their power to be more sensible, and make it easier to view the forums for everyone, we'd rather not have to put in restrictions on files sizes and number of IMG's, but if we must we will.

im afraid Smartgroups this is not, and how bland would it be without a bit of colour here an there anyway.

Well said Mark, but it's a Ford :flame:

hopkinsgm
24-09-2003, 13:14
Speaking as someone who often responds on some of the more "help, my car's broken" 'tech' type threads, knowing what the car being referred to is kinda important. And many people put their car details in their sig, so don't tend to mention in any great detail what the car they're having problems with is when they post their tales of woe...

Points taken on board though - sorry, just ignore me, i'm being a whinging old c*nt... ;) download speeds tend not to be a problem on broadband at home - it's just when i'm doing a bit of lunchtime surfing at work, when i guess the rather large pipe at work is probably fairly heavily utilised...

i wasn't trying to suggest that i wanted a total ban on all images, use of colour, etc. but you have to admit, when the post is simply a one word response but you've got the best part of a screenful of sig it's getting beyond a joke. sadly, without enforcing rules on sig length and/or sizes of images in sigs, i don't know how this can be addressed other than relying on forum users to use their common sense - and that's always going to be a dangerous game to be playing :D ;)

ZBOYD
24-09-2003, 13:37
This is it G to an extent i agree, and i can see totally how some of the huger signature files are cluttering the pages, and i must admit to finding it somewhat barmy sometimes.

Mine is slightly more portly than usual due to me wanting to pimp our friend Spencer Marsh, but from Friday that will be gone.

I would generally like to urge a little more self control, and just a little more consideration for other forum members who have to view them.

But i dont want to ban them nor should i have to.

As ive said to mark, im sitting on the fence on this one, simply cause i like to have a signature, but ive also got sympathy for those that dont want to have scroll thru them all too.

But i can see whichever side of the fence your on, you can be more proactive, one one side, think about whether you really need to view them, and turn em off, and on the other side, be more considerate and make your sigs as small as possible, and use less IMG;s

Each line break you put in is causing a new line to be made. Try removing them and keeping the text on the same line in your sig box.

So:
Leon (Womble I):
