I could use some tips & advice when I'm upgrading this beast. Don't want to make too many changes, just subtle ones like
A K&N Filter & Induction Kit - which one should I use?
I'd also like a couple of other extras that won't break the bank but will no doubt end up with me breaking the speed limit and getting a few points - such is life!
I'm open to suggestions & ideas for others who may have done up a Toledo 97 Sport 8v.
Cheers!!!!
Your engine is the same as the 8v Ibiza/Cordoba so you can look at what people have done to them. I have had both a K & N panel filter and Pipercross induction kit, neither of which made much of a difference (except the noise the induction kit made). I have recently reverted back to the stock panel filter and it feels every bit as quick.
I would say the chip would make most difference but haven't had first hand experience of this (although am planning to). Also you could look at getting a mild cam perhaps.
RE the filters, the best compromise may be to get a K & N panel filter and stuff a big cold air tube into the air box. This should work as well as an induction kit, whilst not sucking hot air in from the engine.

mild cam and remap to suit would be the best thing and money well spent!
just from my personal experience thats all.:) :D

I'm deadset on a K&N induction kit - does anyone know what one I should use as when I've contacted my local dealer he seems to be a bit clueless!!
What does a mild cam involve and how much would it set me back?
I agree with Tony2Quick4u.

if you go to Autotechnics in Southampton which from my experience is proabably one of the best VAG specialised/modifying dealers there is
something like a piper cam all in, VAT+fitment is about £380 from them but they do a superb job
as for the re-map you are again looking at £300 but the results will really be noticable, trust me. gives the 8v's alot more mid range punch and makes them even more torquey, I had the same doen to my 8v, well worth every penny an di just had the cams and not the re-map so the remap would have made it even quicker......it was quick with just the cams in!!
your choice anyway but thats the best way i reckon to spend your money if you want some real performance of of your little 8v.
Cheers

This is exactly what I have planned for my 8v. Although I have had this planned for the 3 years that I have owned the car and not got round to it yet! Will do one day.
Do they change the cam belt when changing the cam?

Don't bother mate, it's a waste of money. Been there, done that. All that will increase is noise! Your power may actually go down (mine did) and your mpg will suffer as well.
Don't flame me anyone, I'm only speaking from past experience on 2 of my cars.

Cool. I think I'll definitely have to pay them a visit then as my cambelt is due now.
Did you get the same cam as Domjolly? Can you remember exactly what one it was?
Cheers

Just a word of warning - check your engine code! 2.0 8v Toledo changed from 2E motor to AGG motor in mid 96, but as we've seen many times over especially with Ibiza's from this period, the build date and date of first registration can confuse matters somewhat. Engine code will be part of the engine number on the V5 registration document (easiest place to find it that doesn't involve getting hands dirty, opening bonnet or lifting carpets, etc...)
FWIW - my ha'penneth on the great 8v induction debate. Personal experience suggests a bit of an improvement in throttle response on an AGG using K&N panel filter compared to standard paper filter. They do need regular cleaning and re-oiling to get the best out of them tho. K&N suggest every 50,000 miles. I do mine every 20,000 and the difference between dirty and just cleaned is noticeable...
I used to have a toledo sport on a '97 p - cammed and chipped it a t RPM (oettinger cam) using a piper cross induction kit and supersprint backbox. It was flippin' lovely to drive, the weight held it back against like tuned ibizas - but it still flew. The induction kit made very little difference until it had the cam and chip - then it all worked together nicely.
On my current chipped 8v I have 3 different induction kits which I've been trying over the last few months (pipercross, blitz and a simota job with heatshield) the pipercross feels the most torquey - but suffers from heatsoak badly. The blitz is the most free revving, but again bogs down with heatsoak, and the simota doesn't feel much different, but is constant however long you drive the car. As for their filtering abilities - ?
I'm currently trying out a golf power rohr to replace the induction pipe, will let you know what happens.

Alright so I've decided to get it chipped - but should I get it chipped and uprate the Cam?
What company should I use (preferably in or around West london) and how much should it really set me back?
I've been mailing a few tuning places and I have been strongly advised to leave the cam alone and just get the remap. I think the cam is only really worthwhile if you go the whole hog and get the head done as well.
Amd always used to be the place to go.
See http://www.auto-amd.com/home.asp
Might be worth going to Stealth for a remap instead.

Ok,
I've decided on getting it chipped. Now, who knows of the best places in or around west london to get it chipped?
If you know of any place, can you post their web address or number here for me?
Cheers!!
No where round there of note. Best bet is to go to AmD in Bicester or Stealth up in the Midlands.

Decided to see if I could get a REVO upgrade on my motor, unfortuanately not, so it looks like a chip is the best way to go?
However, that only provides an extra 8-10bhp, any ideas on how else I should upgrade it to get the most out of the engine?
Although only 8-10bhp it is supposed to make a big difference to driveability. Smooths out any flat spots, more low down torque, more responsive etc.
Have a look for some of the old threads on re-mapping an 8v and see if you would like some of that.
